CB&Q NW2 9244
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3640) on EMD Order E699 for 28 NW2's (#'s 9220-9247). It became BN 541 and was retired July 1982. We are looking east at the East End Way Freight as engineer Fred Huntley watches for hand signals to proceed slowly west. The Maintenance of Way crew on the ground will open the doors on the Hart Selective Service hoppers and discharge ballast along this side of Track 1. The less used track to the right leads to Moser Lumber.

Of interest is the Vapor-Clarkson standby heater on the running board in front of the cab. The purpose of this was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather. The standby heater would heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. The heater was seldom used, due to the difficulty in restarting the prime mover due to cold batteries and other auxiliaries.

CB&Q NW2 9244
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 21, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here with Fred Huntley at the throttle on the East End Way Freight backing onto the main line after switching the industries on the north side of Naperville. He will cross all three main line tracks and switch the south side. Then he will proceed east, most likely stopping at Downers Grove to switch the industries there. This train switched all the industries between Eola and Congress Park. Note the device on the running board ahead of the cab. This is a Vapor Standby Heater, the purpose of which was to permit the diesel to be shut down in cold weather. This device would heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block. Usually it was enclosed in a sheet metal housing on the switchers and GP7's and 9's. It was also applied to the SD7's and 9's, but there was enough room in the rear of the long hood to install it there. In practice, it was seldom used because of the difficulty in restarted the diesel with cold batteries.
