Sleepy station
Title:  Sleepy station
Description:  The look of the Ronkonkoma station area is that of a sleepy outpost in the pine barrens. This was the terminus of most trains on the Main Line at the time-the LIRR had just extended a pair of rush hour runs to Yaphank-but was a fairly quiet place, compared to its counterparts on the north(Port Jeff) and south (Babylon and Patchogue) shores. There was a single track main, and a small yard with a wye just east of the station. The station had an agent/op who handled tickets and cleared trains past block station KO, as well as handing up orders to freights. In ten years, this will be a completely different place. We see a westbound preparing to depart with the typical train set, an FA on the west end, three cars(five was more common), and a GP 38 on the east end.

Old classics
Title:  Old classics
Description:  An FA leads a westbound Port Jefferson train toward a New York connection at Huntington, making its stop at St James, the oldest existing station on Long island, built in 1873. Note the railfan chase vehicle parked at lower left-the gray Chevelle with white top. I chased a lot of trains in that car, putting 68000 miles on it in three years.

Busy time
Title:  Busy time
Description:  Queens Village was at the end of the four track Main Line. East of here, the two tracks to Hempstead separated at Queens, with the two Main Line tracks going on to Hicksville. As such, there was a lot of action. Here we see a Hempstead train pulling away, having just discharged its riders as an Oyster Bay train blows past on track 3. The Hempstead train will stay where it is, taking that track to Garden City, where it will turn south to the end of the line. The Oyster Bay train will cross over one track to the left and continue out Main Line track 2 to Mineola.

Kabin Kars
Title:  Kabin Kars
Description:  The LIRR ran a Kabin Kar Trek on this Sunday, covering some of the freight only areas on the west end, including Bushwick Terminal and the Bay Ridge Branch. After swapping power at Jamaica, it ran out the Mitchell Field Secondary behind a set of Alcos. Here is is passing the Queens Village team yard with FA 609 leading a pair of C 420s repainted in the MTA scheme from the 1960s. The Centuries still have their 251 engines, but the FA has had its 244 removed and a Caterpillar engine/generator set installed. It's just along for the ride, but an Alco cab leading a pair of Centuries is still a good looking consist.

Still the same-thankfully
Title:  Still the same-thankfully
Description:  The LIRR had been using FAs on the rear of trains since the early 70s when everything was powered by C 420s. Now, late in the GP 38 era, they were still in service, though not for much longer. Ten years hence, new power and cars would send these old warriors to scrap. This one is taking up the rear on an Oyster Bay train.
