CB&Q PMC 9845 & E8 9937B
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9845 & E8 9937B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9845 & E8 9937B at Saint Joseph, Missouri on June 22, 1957 by Dick , Kodachrome by Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. An unfortunate shadow, or perhaps an unfortunate spotting of the gas-electric, at least from a photographic point of view. This photo shows the E unit painted in the as-delivered black "whisker" stripes on the nose. This was the first E8 delivered to the CB&Q (c/n 9674), built in December 1949, retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. All the CB&Q E8's and E9's were delivered with black "whiskers", and it was not until 1959 that the red "whiskers" were first applied. This E8 also shows the coupler covers (in the open position) applied to the E's and subsequently removed.

CB&Q E8 9937B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9937B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9937B at the Zephyr Pit near 14th Street in Chicago on Illinois, March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1949 (c/n 9674) on EMD Order 2012A for 19 E8's, it became BN 9937 and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. This was the lowest numbered E8 on the CB&Q, presumably the first one delivered. It was built with Aluminum painted side panels, and during shopping the panels on this locomotive were changed to a stainless steel/plywood sandwich. The E8 was the first passenger locomotive offerd by EMD with the option of dynamic brakes. The Burlington chose not to include this option, but instead had a 600 gallon water tank installed in the location that would have been occupied by the dynamics, supplementing the 1350 gallon underbody tank. The E8's were delivered with a 55:22 gear ratio, producing a top speed of 98 mph.
