PRR 8608, APS-24MS, 1958
Description:
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 June 1958. Shown near the Passenger Station is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8608, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. It's moving so as to couple onto a westbound passenger train that's barely visible at the left. Sandwiched in between are (R to L) engines #8667 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by ALCo and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was built in February of 1958. Several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings dominate the background. William E. Description:
17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Spring of 1960. Shown here are PRR engines #8608 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8608 was built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pushing a westbound mail/express train under the 17th Street Bridge. Also visible is N-5 Caboose #5010, for mail/express service only. The words under the number "5010" are as follows: "ASSIGNED TO PASSENGER SERVICE // RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY"

They are pushing a westbound mail/express train around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Note: No caboose!

Special. Here is an original (out-of-focus) photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Flaming Foliage Special" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1963. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606, #8610, and #8608. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8606 and #8608 were built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pulling the empty 12-car "Special" into the Altoona Passenger Station for boarding, after arriving from Pittsburgh where the train was made-up.

17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. On the right (L to R) are PRR engines #5877 and #5876. Both are EP-20's built by EMD in 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. They are about to stop at the Altoona Station with a nine-car passenger train on its way to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City. On the left (L to R) are PRR engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. They are returning to Altoona after making a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and back. This photo taken adjacent to ALTO Tower.
