Description:  4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8655, #8676, and #8661. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8655 was built in 1957, but #8676 and #8661 were built in 1958. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train pulled by PRR engines #9607 and #9614-B, but will uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another run up the Allegheny Mountains. Visible on the left are numerous passenger cars marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8673, #8664, #8676, #8661, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing a 98-car iron-ore train (headed by engine #2225) up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and head back down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. At the very end is N-8 caboose #478124. The homes in the background line one side of Altoona's 10th Avenue.

Description:  Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here at the far left (L to R) are PRR engines #8676 and #8665. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They have just arrived to serve as "helpers" for an westbound passenger train due to arrive shortly. Visible in the center is PRR engine #8677, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is coupled to the "eastern" work train and steam-powered crane that are rerailing the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Visible on the right (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM while #8890 is an AS-10. Visible in the background are four of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. A portion of 10th Avenue is visible in the immediate foreground.

Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
