Grand View In The Yard
Title:  Grand View In The Yard
Description:  Late Friday night the EJ&E 703 came in on a CN train and was set out here in the former Illinois Central Yard (Grand Ave, Yard) in Decatur, Illinois. Unique history for this unit, built in December of 1972 for the EJ&E and then sold to Birmingham Southern Railroad in 1987. In 1996, the then Birmingham Southern 703 was then sold back to the EJ&E and retained the 703 number. Hanging out here under the sanding tower is the only GP38-2 on the EJ&E roster when the Canadian National took over.

Description:  EJE 703 takes a quick break with the GTW 4930 in the CN Grand Avenue Yard (former Illinois Central Yard) in Decatur, Illinois after shuffling cars around. This was a quick set up and grab shot before the night crew went back to work, must have been their union break. Either way it worked out well in my favor for a few quick shots.

IC 3138 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 3138 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck.

EJE 703 and CN 4721
Title:  EJE 703 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Dec. '18. After completing their work here, the local willcontinue on to Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, can be seen beyond Carter's Caboose. Built in 1916, the walls include some intricate brickwork. The keystones above the windows (now concealed) depict bowling pins. Of course, all of the interesting brickwork, painstakingly crafted by skilled masons 102 years ago, has been defaced and obscured with cheap metal siding, which Miller Electric applied at some point after they acquired the historic facility ca. 1975.

EJE 703
Title:  EJE 703
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Dec. '18. After finishing here, train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, can be seen between the locomotives. Built in 1916, the walls include some intricate brickwork. The keystones above the windows (now concealed) depict bowling pins (not sure if they are carved stone or cast concrete). Of course, all of the interesting brickwork, painstakingly crafted by skilled masons 102 years ago, has been defaced and obscured with cheap metal siding, which Miller Electric applied at some point after they acquired the historic facility ca. 1975.

EJE 703, et al.
Title:  EJE 703, et al.
Description:  A CN local passes the depot/yard office as it shoves a string of cars into the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Dec. '18. After finishing here, train continued on to Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Train had two locomotives, EJE 703 and CN 4721. There used to be a diamond about where CN 4721 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW.

EJE 703 and CN 4721
Title:  EJE 703 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local crosses N. Meade St. and bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 30 Dec. '18. It was founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. Appleton changed its name to Appvion, Inc. on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

CN 4100 and EJE 703
Title:  CN 4100 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local rests at Millview Dr. on the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 9 Feb. '19. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., is partially visible in the background at right. Up until 2009, this train would have been obscured by the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874). Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down (demolition was completed in May 2009).
