IC 9625 and CN 9486
Title:  IC 9625 and CN 9486
Description:  CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. North St./W. Packard St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Sep. '17. Train was headed back to Neenah after servicing Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. Where this solitary track is, there were once seven. The C&NW freight house used to stand on the other side of the tracks. As you can see, I was zoomed in one increment too far.

CN 9486
Title:  CN 9486
Description:  A CN local approaches the intersection of S. Lynndale Dr. and W. Everett St. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Appleton, WI on 28 Jun. '18. Train was headed back from Shawano. Even though the crossing signals and bell were activated and the train's horn was blaring, the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe was creeping forward to see if he could beat the train (he was supposed to stop well out-of-frame to the right when the RR crossing signals activated). He wisely determined that he probably could not and backed up to give the train some space.

The Foremost facility is partially visible at right. They have a spur, but it has not been used for quite a while. The facility partially visible in the background is occupied by WOW Logistics and PODS Self-Storage, 1840 W. Spencer St. They also have a spur which has not been used for quite a while.

Description:  CN 9486 rests on the yard lead in front of the depot/yard office (out-of-frame to left) at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 4 Jul. '18. It is unusual to see a string of cars coupled to the locomotive here between shifts. The well-maintained track that runs from left to right through the center of the photograph is the north leg of the wye. The nearly buried track closer to me is a spur occasionally used for MoW equipment.

Description:  A CN local parallels the Newberry Trail (originally Newberry St.) as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Sep. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. It's difficult to see from this angle, but at the mid-point of the visible portion of the trail, you can see where a spur used to cross Newberry St. to serve the Consolidated Papers Interlake Division (historically Interlake Pulp & Paper Co.) mill. The oldest part of the mill was built ca. 1890 by the Manufacturing Investment Company, on the site of the 1861 Richmond Brothers paper mill, which was destroyed by fire in 1887. The large, historic manufacturing facility was destroyed several years ago in order to make way for butt-ugly condominiums, a dreadful apartment building, and an unadorned, overrated hotel. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks.

Description:  A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Mar. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the train. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries (abbreviated), 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, originally built as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

CN 9486
Title:  CN 9486
Description:  A CN local approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 17 Apr. '19. The interesting building at right houses Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897, which stood to the right (the drive way was the spur). Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the Marshall Paper Co. when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. restaurant opened here in ‘77. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

IC 9614 and CN 9486
Title:  IC 9614 and CN 9486
Description:  A CN local approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 May '19. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility partially visible in the background at right is, or was, Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St.

CN 9486 and GTW 5850
Title:  CN 9486 and GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

GTW 5850 and CN 9486
Title:  GTW 5850 and CN 9486
Description:  A CN local crosses N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 8 Jun. '19. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed last year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop & Shop is partially visible to the right, if you appreciate an excellent selection of liquor, beer, and wine. As I pulled into their parking lot, I heard a horn signaling the approach of this train. I was forced to photograph the train before going into the store to make my beer selection.
