A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd., passes Milepost BG 211, and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast with 20 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

CN 9515, et al.
Description:
A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 9515 and GTW 5812. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:
A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

Description:
A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it shoves a trio of boxcars northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 20 Dec. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, can be seen in the background at right.

FOXY Power in CNs Neenah Yard
Description:
Seen from the West Cecil bridge, four lease units sit in CNs Neenah yard. It appeared either WATCO of CN employees had started the units and were inspecting the locomotives. The four units will be brought to Appleton yard where WATCOs Fox Valley and Lake Superior (FOXY) will take over two CN branch lines (among many others in Wisconsin) on January 29th 2022. The closest locomotive to the camera is HLCX 3880 (GP38-2) and the furthest is HLCX 1042 (GP38-2). I was unable to get the other two units reporting marks. Nearby sit CN 9515 (GP40-2LW) and GTW 4906 (GP38-2).
