Chinese red Q 50018 is a typical Mather steel-framed 40-foot double-deck wooden stock car. In 1963, CB&Q numbers 50000 - 50139 were set aside for 140 Mather 40-foot cars on lease, and numbers 50200 - 50239 were set aside for 40 50-foot stock cars. In actuality, only 60 of the planned 140 40-foot cars were received and painted and lettered for the Q. The 40-foot cars were apparently from one large block of over 500 Mather cars that had been leased to the B&O and numbered in the B&O 110000 series. Upon their return to Mather ( which had been sold to North American Car Company in 1960 ), they were given NAHX reporting marks and placed in per diem service. Upon their lease to the Q, they were sent to Havelock ( Nebraska ), painted Chinese red, and given CB&Q reporting marks and numbers. All 100 leased Mather cars ( 60 40-foot and 40 50-foot ) were used in sheep and hog service on the Q in combination with the railroad's own cars, and they appear to have lasted until 1968, five years after they were leased. At any rate, all were gone by the time of the BN merger in 1970.
