L&N Bridge
Title: L&N Bridge
Description: This bridge on the Louisville & Nashville (now the CSX) spans the Rigolets Pass in eastern New Orleans. It was opened for traffic in January, 1925 and replaced the original structure built in 1870. The bridge features pile trestle approaches and nine steel truss spans, with a 424-foot center-pivot draw span for the navigation channel. This view looking southeast was shot from the elevated walkway to the old drawtenders' house on Rabbit Island, which had been ravaged by the 1947 hurricane but was still standing. About 2/3 mile behind the photographer was the station at Rigolets, Louisiana which was finally closed 14 months after this photo was made.

L&N F7B 1915
Title: L&N F7B 1915
Description: Louisville & Nashville F7B 1915 was parked on the Old East Siding at Pascagoula, Mississippi between E8A 797 and E7A 790. The locomotives had come in with a special passenger train from New Orleans, and would return the next day. The 1915 had been built in June 1950 as Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis 915, and it was renumbered L&N 1915 after the NC&StL merged with the L&N in 1957. It was equipped with a steam generator and a 61:16 (71 MPH) gear ratio, so both railroads used it in both freight and passenger service. The little lettering near the front of the unit reads DULUX 9-21-62, showing that the unit had just recently been repainted with DuPont DULUX enamel, probably just for operation on this special. The locomotive was renumbered 721 in 1965, retired in January 1971 and then traded in to EMD.

Description: This view of the Louisville & Nashville’s station at Rigolets, Louisiana was taken from Train No. 33-99, the combined PIEDMONT from New York, the PAN-AMERICAN from Cincinnati and the GULF WIND from Jacksonville. Even though it looked like it was out in the middle of nowhere, Rigolets station was within the city limits of New Orleans, 30 miles east of downtown. It remained in use until August 1962; although during its final years the only service here were commuter trains 9 and 12, which ran between New Orleans and Pass Christian, Mississippi. After this building closed, trains 9 and 12 continued to stop here until they made their last runs on 6 May 1964.

LADY BIRD SPECIAL
Title: LADY BIRD SPECIAL
Description: From 6 through 9 October 1964, less than one month before the presidential election between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Senator Barry Goldwater, the president’s wife Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson rode on a 19-car campaign train from Washington D.C. to New Orleans via Jacksonville. I managed to see the train, quite by accident, on its way into New Orleans at Canal Blvd. and had no idea what it was until I saw the red-white-and-blue observation car lettered LADY BIRD SPECIAL. I wasn’t much of a railroad photographer back then, and it was dark when I saw it; but Phillip Kotheimer shot the train earlier that afternoon in Mobile, while its three E-units were being refueled from a tank truck just south of the station.

After it was retired in 1963, it went into private ownership, and was leased to Paramount for the movie.

Title: ATSF Box Car 142828
Description: Santa Fe 40-foot, 50-ton box car AT&SF 142828 was on the Louisville & Nashville on 4 April 1966, spotted in the north end of the OLD SIDING at Pass Christian, Mississippi. This was one of 2,010 Bx-37 Class cars in the ATSF 141301-143310 series which had been built under Pullman-Standard Lot No. 5652 in 1941. Notice the truck nearest the camera. The car had been on a southbound fast freight when it developed a hot box in Gulfport, nine miles from here. The crew brought their four U-25B units here and swapped them out for a geep that was tied up there. Then they went back and carefully walked the car here. The truck frame collapsed just as they were moving the car into the siding.
