Album Info:The photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2014, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I succeed in catching ELS and WSOR on their former MILW rails too.

EJ&E 663
Title:  EJ&E 663
Description:  CN local slows down to stop at the northeast end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction on 21 Mar. '14. Train was going to set out a string of cars here before continuing on to service Little Chute and Kaukauna. I was starting to worry about the kid in blue standing by the 2nd telephone pole from the left; he was walking along the main line and seemed oblivious to the approaching local until it was rather close to him.

TTZX 861480
Title:  TTZX 861480
Description:  TTZX 861480 spotted at the (current) northern limit of the CN, former MILW, rails at Milepost 171 at Hilbert Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '14. The car's specs. included LD LMT 221400, LT WT 64600, IH 11-5, IL 73-0, L 75-0. This car may have been spotted here so it could be unloaded by a construction co. at the adjoining property. There were tire tracks in the snow and gravel that indicate a tractor may have pulled the car onto the grade crossing so it could be accessed for unloading, then pushed back clear of the grade crossing when they were done. The active rails end just north of Crosstown Rd. where the Fox River State Trail begins near Ott Rd.

CN 4715
Title:  CN 4715
Description:  CN local approaches Depot St. as it pulls 8 cars westward via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 22 Mar. '14. Local was headed back to Neenah after servicing Little Chute and Kaukauna. The depot used to stand just out of frame to the left, the location is currently occupied by Van Zeeland's Auto Care Center and convenience store at the intersection of Depot St. and Hwy. OO. The spur on the right is for Crystal Print, Inc., which receives periodic rail service. On 29 Mar. ’15 the station signs were laying on the ground. Barron, WI based Cross Country Clearing, LLC was removing some of the old telephone poles in order to harvest the copper wire along the right-of-way. I had hoped that they would re-install the station signs when they were done, but they did not.

GTW 4924
Title:  GTW 4924
Description:  CN local pulls 4 cars westward through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 24 Mar. '14. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

GTW 5856 and IC 9602
Title:  GTW 5856 and IC 9602
Description:  CN local extracts 5 boxcars from the WSI/Appvion warehouse via former C&NW rails at Milepost 118 at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '14. WSI/Appvion is out of frame to the right, reached by a sharp S-curve that really makes the flanges squeal. The pair of tan buildings in the photo belong to someone else; they have a spur but don't appear to receive rail service. They spotted 2 new boxcars at the warehouse, meaning the train would pull 29 cars the rest of the way to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly, Combined Locks, and Appleton.

GTW 4914
Title:  GTW 4914
Description:  CN local shoves past the Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., Menasha, WI, on 28 Mar. '14. It was preparing to head back to the former SOO yard in Neenah after servicing several industries in the Twin Cities of Menasha and Neenah. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert Paper mill, it was built along the canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers (who then founded a new paper company with their father and another brother). The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to an employee in Mar. '14. The name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking paper, high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products. When the closure was announced, it was claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable, which seems to be the catch phrase of every 21st Century American corporation when they shut down any historic industrial facility.

Description:  CN local pauses on the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River while servicing the Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. mill at Kaukauna, WI on 30 Mar. '14. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The rails used to extend past this red flag and rail stop to carry C&NW trains to Manitowoc, WI. Part of that former right of way through Kaukauna is now the Konkapot Creek Trail, which is a little odd because the actual stream is named Kankapot Creek.
