Album Info:I like shortlines the best, and years ago I started keeping a list of all the ones I hit. This album is intended to be the picture record of my baglist. I'm picking the one picture that epitomizes each line, as far as I'm concerned. I owe a lot of this to G.M. McDonald's publication "The Short Line". In pre-internet days, TSL is how I found many a shortline. Months & year are good, day is usually approximate, and not all pictures are up to standards-fair warning.

East Texas Central (ETC)
Title:  East Texas Central (ETC)
Description:  When I was there, the CALM had stopped operating the line, and the East Texas Central was running trains. So said the train crew when I asked for permission to be on-site. The CALM still existed, but was subleasing to ETC or something like that. On Sunday, this train was arriving from the northern end of the line with carloads of roofing granules.

Title:  A&R Line (ARE)
Description:  Lousy shot, I agree, but all I got this Saturday. 7302 is parked in its 'enginehouse' (better known as the grain loadout) on a nasty cold February. ARE is the operator, but line was subleased to Winamac Southern, which was owned by Central of Indianapolis, hence a CERA engine on the line.

Title:  Strasburg (SRC) freight-original shortline
Description:  Its easy to forget that the Strasburg is still a Class 3 shortline, hauling freight. On my one visit there, I managed to catch a freigth move, switching out plastic pellet hoppers. What you can't see is the SRC GE 44 tonner is actually pushing at the rear, and old #1 is being used as a switching platform by the conductor.

Title:  East Penn Rwy (EPRY)
Description:  It took a search of STB documents to figure it out, but it seems EPRY sold most of its operations to Penn Eastern RR in 1997, except for this line. So 57 is actually operating for EPRY. Penn Eastern & EPRY merged in 2007 to form the current East Penn RR.

Cape Brenton & Central Nova Scotia (CBNS)
Title:  Cape Brenton & Central Nova Scotia (CBNS)
Description:  We made the long trip to Sydney to buy RS18 #3842, subject to results of the inspection. Sitting there was a long line of dead C630ms and RS18s. According to the line GM, all were parked running, but had all copper & aluminum stolen out of them within about 2 weeks. The replacement EMDs were GP50s, and had a really high rate of on the road failure-junk according to the CBNS crews. Most of the MLWs were scrapped. The 3842 we were there for had been parked running, but left full of water during the winter-frozen block. We didn't buy her, and she was also cut up.

Windsor & Hansport (WHRC)
Title:  Windsor & Hansport (WHRC)
Description:  A couple of us Fremont Northwestern guys made trips to assess locomotives for purchase, back when FNW was cranking. At the time, junk EMDs were $100k and running Alcos were $20k, so the math was easy. One stop was the WHRC which had all its RS23s up for sale, against the wishes of the line's GM. The GM said the line's owner was forcing them to go EMD, and the RS23s always started and ran, and were better on fuel. WHRC was trying to sell all the units together and wouldn't sell individual units, which was too much $$ for us to bite off. Eventually, I heard all of them were scrapped for their 251 engines and electical gear.

Fremont Northwestern RR (FNW)
Title:  Fremont Northwestern RR (FNW)
Description:  This may be one of the only pictures of the FNW in operation. At this time, FNW was a contract carrier, storing about 140 cars on several unused sidings. FNW was the creation of a few of us who were with the Eastern Nebraska Chapter of NRHS (ENC for short). FNW ran freight over ENCs line, with Fremont & Elkhorn Valley (FEVR) running the passenger. FNW was conceived for the singular purpose of pouring $$ into ENC's operation, by taking over regular maintenace of equipment and track, using $$ generated by freight service. Our first year, we poured in 5 figures into track material, and a new Roots blower for 1219. Not bad, considering ENC did not have the money for this maintenace work. Still, after running over a year, FNW ran afoul of a faction within ENCs Board that wanted no freight. When the track lease came due, they saw to it that there would be no lease renewal. FNW moved out the stored cars and folded. By 2003, ENC financial state was so bad that they asked FNW to come back, and FNW received STB authority to become a Class 3 common carrier. However, UP had red-boarded the connecting track, so there was no connection, and the local business community didn't support the new FNW operation. FNW gave up in 2005. ENC rebranded itself as Nebraska Railway Museum, but the financial slide continued until the bank called in their loan a couple of years ago. The track was sold to a shortline owner to retire the loan, but the new owner has made no attempt to run the line.

Nashville & Western (NWR)
Title:  Nashville & Western (NWR)
Description:  This RR line may set a record for ownership changes. After abandonment by Tennessee Central in 1968, the line has been operated by ICG; Nashville & Ashland City; Cheatham County Rail Authority; Walking Horse & Eastern; McCormick, Ashland City & Nashville; and the Central of Tennessee Rwy & Navigation. Eventually, the line found stability with the Nashville & Western, which is owned by Nashville & Eastern, over on the east side of town.

Tyson RR (TSNR)
Title:  Tyson RR (TSNR)
Description:  This is a weird one. Back in 89, Tyson bought a branch to preserve access to their big feed mill in Ivalee. 293 went from being just the plant switcher to being a Class 3 shortline unit. However, unit grain trains still came in with run-through CSX power & crews, so 293 still just worked the mill. After many years of ownership, Tyson sold the line back to CSX and exited the railroad business.

Dakota Short Line (DAKS)
Title:  Dakota Short Line (DAKS)
Description:  Dakota Short Line (official rpt marks DAKS) was an attempt to reopen part of the ex Dakota Southern, exx MILW Napa-Platte line. DAKS actually ran out to Tyndell on 65 lb rail with this beast. Grain loading never materiallized, and they were forced to give up the operation. Paint was brand new in this picture-there were paint cans and equipment still sitting on the north side of the unit. Nice job.

Acadiana (AKDN)-Donaldsonville
Title:  Acadiana (AKDN)-Donaldsonville
Description:  My first encounter with AKDN was the out of the way branch from north of Donaldsonville to the Lula Sugar refinery. It must have been a brakeman's worst enemy-no run-arounds, so they had to shove from the interchange to the refinery, about 5 miles. The branch ran from nowhere to nowhere, and many trips there failed to find them running. Today, it appears they have quit running, and the rails are partly buried by surrounding farm fields.

Arcade & Attica (ARA)-original shortline
Title:  Arcade & Attica (ARA)-original shortline
Description:  Much to my annoyance, 112 was under open-air repairs by the feed mill on the day I was there. Tanks cars precluded a better shot, so oh well.

Western New York & Pennsylvania (WNYP)
Title:  Western New York & Pennsylvania (WNYP)
Description:  WYNP was a drive-by on my way to a job, and 426 was the only game that day. Strange but true, I evaluated this engine for purchase by the shortline I was with when it was Hudson Bay Rwy 603. Purchase deal fell through and she wound up on WYNP.
