Journal Square
Title:  Journal Square
Description:  The area near Journal Square had a lot of activity. The tracks to the left are the PATH station and yard, a large complex that had car shops and MOW, among other things. The two tracks at right are the ex PRR Passaic & Harsimus Branch, which went from Kearny out to the piers at Harsimus Cove. By this time it was a freight yard, but until 1961, some passenger trains terminated there at a ferry to Manhattan, though not many after Penn Station in NY was opened. We see a long cut of cars behind an ex EL SW 9 about to pass the station on the P&H, heading toward the waterfront yard. Note the catenary above the SW. Conrail was still running electrified freight here at the time, and it was possible to see GG 1's, E 44's and ex NH/VGN E 33's here.

Back to Croxton
Title:  Back to Croxton
Description:  Well, maybe. Could also be going to North Bergen, but my bet is Croxton, which handled a lot more general freight than the ex NYC yard, which had become largely an intermodal and auto rack yard. Our SW takes the connection at Marion Jct after dropping its train at Harsimus Cove. Now, off to get some baseball cards....

West end
Title:  West end
Description:  In August 1978 I rode the Broadway from New York to Chicago. At the time, it was still a main freight route to the Windy City for Conrail, and I recall a number of things from that trip. One was outrunning a white Firebird that was pacing us on adjacent US 30. The other was that we seemed to meet an eastbound every 30 minutes or so. There also was some local traffic on the route, as we see here. A solo GP 7 works a siding near Valpo.

Still some Alcos
Title:  Still some Alcos
Description:  The Alco fleet did not have a long tenure on CR, as they almost immediately set out to make their roster all EMD or GE, once they got a handle on what they had and sorted out the worst power. Six axle Alcos tended to stay on the Cleveland ore trains, with the four axle power at various points around the system, a lot of times not too far from home. This is an example, an ex PRR unit working at Kearny.

Interesting yard power
Title:  Interesting yard power
Description:  One of the trips I would do was a ride to Newark on the ex DLW, which passed the Conrail Meadows Yard in Kearny. I was not always able to get a well composed shot, but I did see some interesting stuff, such as this GP 35/GP9B set working the yard.

LV pup
Title:  LV pup
Description:  For some reason I always wound up riding on rainy days. Either those were the only days I had available, or the rain just follows me around. The benefit was that it evened out the light when shooting places like Kearny from the DLW, which was normally a dark side photo. Here we see an ex LV "pup" SW 8 with another CR switcher.

Title:  Some of each

Action at Lane
Title:  Action at Lane
Description:  Conrail freights heading down the ex PRR would come through the ex PRR yard at Waverly, then reach the Northeast Corridor at LANE Tower between Newark and Elizabeth. The Dutch door of a train was a perfect spot to see one, in this case, from a New York bound Jersey Coast train. A three unit set of then new GP40-2's leads the train out from the flyover.

CR once had 50 of these
Title:  CR once had 50 of these
Description:  CRs SD 35s came from two previous owners, the PRR and CNJ. The nose of one of the ex Pennsy units is seen in a grab shot from a passing PATH train near Marion Jct-note the curving track at right. That connects to the ex NYC North Bergen yard. I once saw an SD 40 take that curve. It was an experience.

Journal Square
Title:  Journal Square
Description:  A Conrail train headed from the ex Pennsy to the ex NYC rolls past the PATH station at Journal Square in Jersey City. This was an intresting place to see Conrail trains. At the time, you could see not only diesel powered trains, but some with various electric units as well, including E33's, E44's and GG1's. CR 6520 was almost brand new on the date of this photo.

Action on the Hack River bridge
Title:  Action on the Hack River bridge
Description:  The PATH train from Jersey City to Newark sometimes yielded some good photo ops, if the timing was right. This time I got a train on the P&H line behind a set of SD40-2s, the lead unit one of the newest on the CR roster at the time, and the 5th from last such unit CR would acquire, the final SD40-2 being 6524. If only the PATH train had been a split second faster, the catenary support would not have cut off the pilot of the lead unit. Close but no cigar!!

6 axle GE
Title:  6 axle GE
Description:  My trips to Jersey were somewhat sporadic, and often were tied to riding the many routes across the Garden State, and not necessarily toward catching the freight action. Im glad I rode all I could at the time-the equipment and some of the routes are gone-but looking back, I wish I had spent more time staking out the freights, which also had some interesting power in those days. I did not see many 6 axle U boats, but once in a while I'd get lucky. This one was on a freight at Kearny yard, seen from a passing DLW train between Hoboken and Newark.

Local freight
Title:  Local freight
Description:  Commuter lines in Jersey are not known for having a lot of freight traffic, but in 1980 there was still enough on the Bay Head line to warrant a fairly sizeable train. Here we see the power up close, a new GP 15-1, a model CR bought 100 of not long after start up, with a train headed back to, I believe, Red Bank.

Power in places youd never expect it.
Title:  Power in places youd never expect it.
Description:  One of the things about Conrail was that units would turn up in unusual places. While its not far from home, prior to CR, who would have expected a Reading GP 30 working on the PRR in Delaware?? As the combined like units in a certain area, power moved around some, and here we find the result. How about that Pennsy hopper!!

On the Corridor
Title:  On the Corridor
Description:  At CR startup, Amtrak got the Corridor, and CR was a tenant. Ultimately, this moved freight off the corridor to a large degree, as Amtrak raised the wheelage rates to a point that was not economical. There was still a fair amount of local traffic, which was served from a variety of yards. This is one of the locals, with a U23B and U30B working south of Newark Penn Station. McCarter Highway is the bridge at left. Note the EL box at right.

Raritan River power
Title:  Raritan River power
Description:  In 1980, Conrail absorbed one of Jerseys more obscure operations, the Raritan River RR, which had a base of operations in South Amboy. I never saw them while they were independent, but did finally catch their SW, still in its original colors, but with a CR number, while watching commuter trains one afternoon.

Title:  GP 35 on the Corridor

Grab shot
Title:  Grab shot
Description:  One of the best ways to see the engine tracks at CRs South Kearny yard was from the ex DLW commuter trains that ran along the north side of the yard. Unfortunately, it offered only the option of grab shots from the train. Still, the power could get interesting. Heres a pair of units typical of the era, with a patched but bleeding through ex PC unit.

Nothing left
Title:  Nothing left
Description:  The Cardinal still ran on the C&O in 1984. I recall commenting to another rider, also a fan, that shooting Conrail SWs was a waste of film. His comment was that he shoots everything, since it will all go away-not his exact words!! How right he was. This CR train was on the ex PRR Panhandle line as it approached North Judson, which was by then already a shadow of its former glorious self. The two main lines, the EL and C&O, had been completely abandoned in the ELs case, and cut as a through route in the case of the C&O. The ex PRR would vanish soon as well, leaving essentially nothing there, except for some short segments that accessed a grain shipper. Now the only thing left is the Hoosier Valley RR Museum, which is worth going there to see, even if there is no main line action. Sic Transit Gloria.

Up the hill
Title:  Up the hill
Description:  A pair of helpers shoves hard on the caboose as they assist a westbound. Note the diversity of rolling stock on this train, a sampling of now fallen flag roads NW, Southern, DT&I and C&NW. All memories, as is now Conrail for the past 20 years.

Eastbound past the park
Title:  Eastbound past the park
Description:  An eastbound drifts downhill toward Altoona past the park at the curve. Conrail often mixed in 4 axle power on many trains, even on heavy grades. Odd as it sounds, seeing a GP 38 in the Alleghenies was not that uncommon. Check out the Reading hoppers, many of which lasted well into the 90's in coal service.

Past the park
Title:  Past the park
Description:  A westbound with a plethora of power rolls past the park in the crook of Horseshoe Curve. There were two more GE's after the listed power, I didn't get the numbers.
