Album Info:A variety of non locomotive rolling stock, mostly freight cars, but also trailers and containers, other highway vehicles, snow plows, flangers, spreaders, components and the like. A big tip of the hat to Paul O'Shell, a retired CN man who served in a variety of work equipment supervisory positions over a 48 year career. Paul has provided valuble information on a wide variety of CN and CP MOW equipment, as well as dispositions when known. Thank you sir!!

Old box
Title:  Old box
Description:  This ex NYC box was being used as storage at Waterbury in the early days of Conrail. At the time, CR was still running the commuter trains out of Grand Central under contract, as well as freight service in southern New England. That would change in a couple of years, withlocal freight work south of the Boston Line going to the Boston & Maine, now Pan Am Railways, and the commuters going to Metro North.

Flanger
Title:  Flanger
Description:  Among other items at Mechanicville was this transfer caboose, an "outhouse on a raft." When editing these slides, I was tempted to crop out the other equipment, then saw there was a variety of now vanished D&H rolling stock, including partial views of an ex Reading box, and one of the 12300 series covered hoppers, as well as a partial view, at left, of another D&H caboose.

Title:  This one is really old
Description:  This steam engine tender was at Danbury in 1981. I recall someone saying it was used as a water tank for fighting fires and other uses where water was not readily available. Dont know what it came off. It would be neat if it was from a NH engine.

Erie camp car
Title:  Erie camp car
Description:  One of the things about the early Conrail period was that there was a lot of predecessor road equipment knocking around in various uses-nothing ever got scrapped til it wouldnt hold together. Therefore, some real relics held on for a long time. One such was this Erie camp car at Campbell Hall on the Graham Line, still serving CR in 1984.

Guess he couldnt get an EMD model plate
Title:  Guess he couldnt get an EMD model plate
Description:  Ya know, the kind like the Q had on their diesels that said "E 5" or "SD 9". So he had to improvise. This car was following C&O 614 the day I was chasing, and is seen in Huntington near the yard. I cant really fault the guy though-for a number of years I had a New York plate, "DDA40X". Its displayed in my office nowadays.

Centennial
Title:  Centennial
Description:  Well, not exactly. The rolling stock in this case is a GM product, but a Chevy and not an EMD. I had this plate for several years in the late 80s. I kept the combination-New York allows you the option of keeping your plate when the style changes, usually about every 15 years. It's mostly a revenue thing, since they charge for a special registration if you keep it-when New York changed to the "Liberty" plates with the Statue of Liberty on them later that year. I still have both of them.

Centennial
Title:  Centennial
Description:  Yes, the kind youre thinking of, but not exactly the diesel. I was able to get this special plate when it was blue/yellow. When New York went to the Liberty plate in 1986, this came in the mail when I renewed. I ran into a guy in Utica once who said he tried to get it, but it was taken. Now he knows why. Its on display in my office now.

Title:  Ive seen trackless trolleys....
Description:  But this is ridiculous!! Sumitomo Rail in Elmira Heights was rebuilding cars for the NYCTA, and trucking them to and from the city.
