Album Info:Album covers the 1988-1990 period when NYSW was operating the railroad under a directed service order, after Guilford put it in bankruptcy and pulled out, through the CP takeover. Covers from Binghamton to Buffalo over Conrail's Southern Tier Line.

Title:  Fields of gold
Description:  The time between when the corn went brown til the first snow could have some wonderful light, especially late in the day, when it made all the corn and grasses take on this golden hue. MEBU rolls west between Chemung and Wellsburg past one of those cornfields. Scenes like this made it a joy to chase in the Southern Tier, despite the lack of density compared to the Chicago Line or the ex PRR.

Stealth leader
Title:  Stealth leader
Description:  A CSX painted unit leads the power on SLN 3, seen on the Buffalo Runner as it begins to roll onto the Tier. The second unit is the interesting one, still in SCL colors, though renumbered. I saw a wide variety of predecessor paint schemes here, but dont think I eve saw a Clinchfiled unit. Look to the right of the signal, you'll see the only NYSW car painted yellow, hopper 600.

As long as you didnt do anything stupid, and stayed out of the way, you were unofficially welcome to come down and shoot all the photos you wanted. I made the most of this sunny day in December 1988, getting this roster shot of a set of 45s, led by one of the Fs.

Description:  Walter Rich put out a directive when the NYSW started running the D&H that NYSW painted units were to lead wherever practicable. This power set is being turned to get the B 40s in the lead. The unit on the other end is a leased GATX GP 38, so its also possible the crew wanted the new unit to run from.

Description:  It was still early enough in the CSX reign that much of the power had not really mixed up. As a result, it was fairly common to see solid sets of Chessie power on the Sea Land trains. We have such a set here on SLN 3, waiting to get onto the Tier next to the old D&H station.

Description:  In future years, it would not be a big deal to see a six axle unit working a yard. NS does it all the time. In 1989, it was something of a novelty. This NW GE is not exactly a yard engine. It will have a couple other units added once it gets its outbound train together. For now, its working the south end at Terrace Dr.

Description:  SLN 5 rolls through the twin semaphores at Tioga Center. This was a popular spot, one of two on the line-the other was just west of Arkport, and not as easy to reach-due to its ease of access and good photo potential.

Description:  The Erie station at Addison was(and is, as of August 2015) standing. In 1989, it still had the Erie station sign, making a good prop for this MEBU as it rolled into the Canisteo valley.
