SLN 5 behind NYSW and NS power
Title:  SLN 5 behind NYSW and NS power
Description:  NYSW and NS power leads SLN 5, symboled DHT 9 on Conrail, past the rocks just east of CP East Glass. This is the approximate location where the DLW and Erie joined going east, with the DLW trains taking the Erie from here to Binghamton after 1959. The DLW was abandoned from here to the west side of Binghamton, except for short segments in Elmira, and from Waverly to Nichols to serve an Agway there. That section was abandoned in 1965. If you know where to look when you're on NY 17 east, you can see vestiges of the right of way near Elmira and Wilawanna; there were still some bridges near Lounsberry, and the Apalachin station still stands. It's a Subway and ice cream shop.

Through the blades
Title:  Through the blades
Description:  SLN 5 rolls through the twin semaphores at MP 243-actually, they are 242-1 and 242-2, they were just east of MP 243-knocking down the signal on track 1. This was probably the most popular shot on the Tier west of Binghamton. Easy to get to, and couldnt beat a pair of blades side by side.

DLW side
Title:  DLW side
Description:  MEBU, looking like NYSW has a pool with BN, rolls west on track 3, the former DLW westbound main, passing the DLW station on the right, and the Erie freight house on the left. The station is still standing, serving multiple purposes for new owners. The freight house was torn down several years later, and replaced with a small building used by local crews. Track 3 was sometimes used if there was traffic on the Erie main between BD and West BD. Also in this view, we see the station power plant, the low brick building with the concrete stack; and the Marconi tower, an early effort at radio communications. The Lackawanna got into radio early, due to the weather related issues with lineside wires that came with the heavy winters in the region.

Yellowjacket on the DLW
Title:  Yellowjacket on the DLW
Description:  MEBU rolls west on track 3, the former DLW westbound main. We see it passing a couple of notable Lackawanna structures. The obvious one is the 1907 station, now privately owned. The stack is from the powerhouse, used to provide power to the station and also the station steam lines for set off sleepers and other cars. The radio tower is a landmark, one of the earliest "Marconi" towers, used in the infancy of radio communications on the railroads. DLW was an early participant in radio, due to a large presence in the "sleet belt", where icing often took down telephone and telegraph lines in the winter.

Clearing town
Title:  Clearing town
Description:  MEBU rolls under the signal at West BD with an ex Reading leader as it clears the Binghamton yard area and rolls for Buffalo. Note the steel milepost under the cab of the 7412. This was DLW MP 195, the westernmost milepost on what remained of the continuous Lackawanna track from New Jersey. Most of the railroad west of here was abandoned after 1959. The remnant in the Binghamton area is at far right, the Vestal Spur, which dead ends a few miles west across the Susquehanna in Vestal.

East side of town
Title:  East side of town
Description:  The east side of Waverly has some notable features. Note how wide the tracks are here. There was a center siding here during Erie and EL days, which was removed by Conrail, but the tracks were never straightened. At left is a pet food plant, which would remain a Conrail customer for several more years. We see PLMT, a coal train for Mt Tom Mass, rolling past with four yellowjackets.

Classic station
Title:  Classic station
Description:  SLN 3 had backed into East Binghamton to set off freight and recrew, and was now headed west. The Hornell dispatcher has decided to run the train out track 3 today, past the ex DLW station, a beautiful 1907 structure that now houses offices, with the SVRHS display equipment taking up the set out tracks. A new B 40 leads today, now a common sight on the Tier.
