Trains chasing
Title:  Trains chasing
Description:  As opposed to chasing trains. MEBU is at the south end of Bevier St on the Buffalo Runner, and will head out to QD and the Tier. At right, RPPY rolls down the Binghamton Runner, and will take the crossing at BD to enter East Binghamton. It also has an NYSW B 40 leading.

F45 reflection
Title:  F45 reflection
Description:  One of the constants in the Southern Tier was the rain-there were 160 cloudy day a year there, and it rained many of them. The result was a lot of puddles. NYSW 3638 is reflected in one of them at the north end of East Binghamton as it waits to go to the Port of Albany with a BUAB.

Smoking it up
Title:  Smoking it up
Description:  D&H 5017 was the regular yard engine for several years, and Id often catch it working at the north end. Today it is shoving a cut of cars into the yard with the usual Alco smoky aplomb. Couple of interesting box cars next to the power, too.

NYSW transfer
Title:  NYSW transfer
Description:  One of the tasks the north end yard job did under the NYSW operation was run interchange traffic over to the NYSW from East Binghamton. Heres 5017 undertaking this task, passing through BD with a cut of cars going to the Susie Q.

Title:  True colors
Description:  D&H 7409 is showing its past as Reading 3409, its paint fading back to the green and yellow it once was. The Reading herald is trying to make a resurgence on the nose as well. Bevier St with a cut of hoppers.

It never stops
Title:  It never stops
Description:  NYSW had a way of putting together some power combinations youd never see anywhere else. Sometimes it happened in the yard, though often youd see them on the road too. This set was one only the Susie Q could come up with, at East Binghamton.

NYK stacks
Title:  NYK stacks
Description:  One of the several double stack train that NYSW ran was for NYK. Trains were symbolled NY 7 west and NY 8 east. This is NY 8 coming into East Binghamton on track 3 from Buffalo. It will get a crew change, and likely add cars for the Southern Division here. Once that is complete, it will back out through BD onto the Tier for the trip east.

Description:  In this case, an SD 45 and an RS 36. The SD 45 was no big deal, but the Alco was one of a declining fleet. Good to see it still in service.

Still around
Title:  Still around
Description:  U30Cs were getting hard to find by the late 80s. UP had retired most of theirs, as had Santa Fe, though BNs soldiered on in coal service. D&Hs own were long gone by this time. This CSX unit strayed up from the south, finding its way to East Binghamton on PYRP. I can count on the fingers of one hand the U30Cs I saw here, so this was a good catch.

Title:  Stuck in the middle
Description:  A set of NYSW power has an unusual visitor in the midst of its B 40s, a GE sister that is now a rare find. Interestingly, all these B 40's would soon wind up on CSX, which had financed them.

Power to head south
Title:  Power to head south
Description:  RPPY and PYRP ran with a mix of CSX and NS power south of Binghamton, though it was usually one or the other, and rarely mixed. This time its NS power, a representative example seen here at the fuel rack. Where else but Binghamton could you find EMD, GE, and Alco all coupled to each other??

Another old friend
Title:  Another old friend
Description:  D&H 5017 was the usual engine working the yard at Binghamton, but a couple of the other RS 36s got in the action as well. Here we see 5009 working a cut of cars with another of Binghamtons odd pieces of rolling stock, NYSW caboose 0121. The old Alco still has some life yet, judging by the plume of smoke.

Yard and road power
Title:  Yard and road power
Description:  D&H 5017 works a cut of cars as todays prize, the power for RPPY, sits next to the tower. I got lucky today-RPPY went south shortly after this was taken, and I was able to chase to Scranton. Another piece of vanished railroading is in this photo: the D&H box car next to 5017.

Title:  Lightning stripes are back
Description:  One of the projects NYSW engaged during its reign over the D&H was to have some of the GP 38s and 39s rebuilt by M-K at Mountain Top PA. The first one to be completed, ex LV unit 7312, was back on the property in March of 1990, and named in honor of legendary D&H engineer Bernie OBrien. We see a side view of the unit outside the East Binghamton engine shop.

The gangs all here
Title:  The gangs all here
Description:  There is quite the crowd at the East Binghamton fuel pad today. NYSW and D&H units bracket a new arrival, a GP39-2 rebuilt at M-K Mountaintop. This was a program undertaken by NYSW to update several units and repaint them into the D&H lighning stripe scheme. Two other 39s were done, 7403 and 7407, as well as several GP38-2s. The power at left will go out shortly on PYRP.

New and rebuilt
Title:  New and rebuilt
Description:  A front end roster view of newly rebuilt at M-K 7407, one of eight units rebuilt and repainted into the lightning stripe scheme. This unit, along with the other 39s, would go to CSX once CP took over the D&H-I saw one in Ohio on the ex B&O about six years later-but the 38s would last a long while into the CP era. As I write this in 2016, there is still at least one in this scheme.
