Album Info:In November 2006 I moved to Rogers Ark, then six months later to Siloam Springs, on the Heavener Sub. Since then, I have taken a lot of photos on the KCS in my new home town. This album contains anything I took between Davidson Rd, MP 226.5, and Elm St, approximately MP 233.

Cresting the hill

Description:  The KCS Heavener Sub is nothing if not a lot of up and down. The line dips between Gentry and Siloam Springs, runs more or less flat through Siloam, then down into the Illinois River valley to reach Watts. Here a southbound TXUX train is cresting the grade at Davidson Rd just north of Siloam Springs.

Description:  An 81 car northbound train of covered hoppers rolls toward Kansas City and more corn. The Belle scheme was making serious inroads to the fleet at this time, but most of the existing fleet was still gray. Seemed ever time I'd see a train with Belles, there would be a gray unit leading. It's only in the last two years or so that the AC44's have been getting repainted, while it seems most of the SD 70's have been done.

Description:  For some reason, the EMDs seem to be getting repainted faster than the GEs. Ive seen quite a few of the SD 70Ms and even some of the original order of SD 70ACes in the Belle scheme, but not many GEs. Description:  A northbound empty grain train rolls toward the Kenwood St crossing in Siloam, its bright colors in contrast to the advancing greenery of spring. This was one of those dumb luck shots. I was coming back across town after lunch and a couple of errands, just when the gates went down. I figured it would be the dodger-at that time of day, it usually is-but got a surprise when this guy showed up. Once in a while, I win one!!

Description:  The Heavener Sub has a roller coaster profile, hence DPUs are common. The obvious reason is to get the heavy trains over the uphill grades, but they are also important going down hill. This H train is now past Lake Frances Rd in Siloam Springs, and headed down to the Illinois River crossing just north of Watts. The dynamics will come in handy over the next three miles or so.
