Album Info:In November 2006 I moved to Rogers Ark, then six months later to Siloam Springs, on the Heavener Sub. Since then, I have taken a lot of photos on the KCS in my new home town. This album contains anything I took between Davidson Rd, MP 226.5, and Elm St, approximately MP 233.

DPU
Title:  DPU
Description:  The H train was 131 cars, actually not unusual for this train, so despite the flood delay, it was not especially heavy. It had a DPU, as it normally does at this size, which we see rolling between the signals at North Siloam Springs, trailing the first train I saw to run through the flood repair area.

Welcome back
Title:  Welcome back
Description:  The KCS Heavener Sub was closed for three days following a 10" rain event that undercut the track for about a half mile north of the Illinois River, and about 1/4 mile south of the bridge, including inundating the north end of Watts siding. This H train is the first one I saw going north, the line now open. Its supposed to rain again this week, but less than 2" this time. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Waffles can wait
Title:  Waffles can wait
Description:  We were heading from church over to Waffle House, which necessitated a trip across the tracks. I looked down the line as I usually do, to see this train approaching with a pair of NS units leading. This is somewhat unusual, and we dont see a lot of them here, so breakfast could wait. There were also a pair on the rear, along with a KCSM GE to get the 102 frac sand cars over the road.

Description:  The DPUs on the frac sand train lean into the 102 cars, though theyll be holding them back the next sis miles or so down to the Illinois River. We see them passing under the still abuilding Cheri Whitlock overpass. That should make a good vantage point for a southbound once its open next year.

View from the bridge
Title:  View from the bridge
Description:  The new Cheri Whitlock Dr overpass in Siloam Springs. The new bridge was opened several months ago, replacing the grade crossing here. There had not been any accidents that I am aware of, but a train passing did tie up traffic for a while, and anyone turning in or out of Country Club Dr could have a long wait in the aftermath of a train. We see the southbound H train about to pass under with 101 cars and a DPU.

Pushing along
Title:  Pushing along
Description:  The DPU on the southbound H train pushes the 101 cars south. The new bridge has some wire issues on the south side, so you need to work around them. At least they are not on the north side of the bridge, allowing a clear view of a southbound train. You just have to work around the chain link fence.

Description:  The northbound H train approaches the new overpass at Cheri Whitlock Dr. The bridge replaced a grade crossing that got backed up every time a train passed. Todays northbound is only 60 cars, but motorists will still be glad not to have to wait even for a short train. A pair of KCSM units lead.

Title:  Taking the signal
Description:  The northbound empty oil train approaches the signal at the north end of the siding, about to take the main heading north. Home signals on KCS are single head: either you go, or you dont, its red or green, by and large. In the northeast where I came from, this would be a two head signal, red over green.

Sometimes you have to take what you get
Title:  Sometimes you have to take what you get
Description:  I came across the US 412 overpass to see the back of a northbound empty oil train sitting in the siding. I made a quick turn through town, anticipating a meet. As usually happens with me, I got the light at Main St red. While I was sitting there, the Lincoln Av crossing gates lit up. Crap-Im going to miss the shot. The head end of the southbound H train went past-a pair of SD 70Ms bracketing an ES 44, all in Belle paint-and I pulled up to the crossing. After the 107 cars of the H train passed, I leaned out the window to get the meet shot, such as it was. This is how it looked from the car.

Title:  Rage against the dying of the light
Description:  Going away shot of the DPU on this southbound grain train as the last light fades. I had spent most of the day outside puttering around the house with various small projects, and heard nothing all day. Just as the light goes, I catch this guy. Just a little too late
Title:  Just a little too late
Description:  I had gone up to dump recycling-the dumpsters are outside the gates of the transfer station, which is near the Lincoln Av crossing. As I was leaving, I crossed the tracks to see the familiar triple headlights to the north. I beat it to the Main St crossing, hoping the open area would have a little more light, maybe enough to get a decent shot. Even on sports mode, which gave me 1/30 second at F4, but a "film speed" of 1600, the light was too far gone. So it goes. Two up front, two pushing, 80 cars of southbound grain.

Red raider
Title:  Red raider
Description:  Todays surprise was a southbound H train coming in to meet the northbound counterpart at Siloam. I had caught the northbound coming into town, and he was stopped in the siding. I ran up to Davidson Rd to catch this train, and got a surprise. CP power is not uncommon on the KCS, though it almost always is seen on unit oil trains headed for the Gulf Coast. Catching it leading the H train was unusual.

Mexico both ways
Title:  Mexico both ways
Description:  This northbound H train is leaving the siding at Siloam after meeting the southbound H train. His leader was a KCSM unit, and so is the trailing power, which looks freshly painted. I would go to Gentry to get the shot of the train from the Ark 12 overpass, but he stopped at Flint Creek to pick up three units off a coal train that had pulled in there. An hour later he was still sitting on the main at the power plant. I never did get the shot off the bridge. Such is life chasing trains.

Title:  Mexican leader
Description:  This northbound H train had a KCSM unit leading. The trailing unit was also KCSM, both in Belle paint. Have not seen that very often.

Meeting the dodger
Title:  Meeting the dodger
Description:  The northbound H train rolls past the dodger, which is working Pipelife Jetstream, and is behind the road train. We had hoped the H train would be slow enough so that the dodger, which was backing cars into the pipe plant, would be side by side. Not to be. Meet shots are always a challenge, and timing is everything. Oh well...

Heard him coming
Title:  Heard him coming
Description:  I was home, about two miles from here south of town, and heard this train blowing for a crossing near Watts. Sometimes I can hear them if the wind is right. I headed into town and set up at Tahlequah St, which I thought would give me a passably lit shot given the late hour. I was hoping for one of the new 5000s leading, but got a KCSM SD 70ACe with a pair of UP units leading approximately 75 cars of H SHKC past the Siloam water tower.

Catching coal
Title:  Catching coal
Description:  I was pulling up to the crossing at Lake Frances Rd when the flashers started, so made a quick grab shot of this southbound. The rear would be more interesting than the head end.
