Album Info:Here are excerpts from the Pennsylvania Railroad's "East-West Time Tables," dated 29 September 1946. Included are the Cover and the PRR System Map, as well as "Table A" and "Table B" ~ which delineate all 72 daily westbound and eastbound passenger trains between New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. With special regard to Altoona, Pennsylvania: The Time Tables list 36 trains from New York to Pittsburgh, all of which stopped at Altoona ~ not only to add helper locomotives for the climb up the Allegheny Mountains, but also to change both engine and train crews. There were an equal number of trains heading the other way, of course, so there were at least 36 helpers plus 72 engine and train crews which passed through the Altoona Passenger Station on a daily basis ~ not to mention hundreds and hundreds of passengers!
