Soo Line high bridge from the air
Title:  Soo Line high bridge from the air
Description:  This shot was taken from a Cessna looking north along the St. Croix River of the bridge on the Soo Line St. Paul to Chicago main line. During this year the bridge was actually out of service until the fall of 1987 when WC took over operation. It is amazing to see how fragile something so large can look from a distance.

Withrow Depot at sunset
Title:  Withrow Depot at sunset
Description:  During the short year or so period that Lake States Transportation ran as a subsidiary of Soo Line. the main line to Chicago was out of service here and only one train a day headed up to Ladysmith and points east, so Withrow was a quiet town. This was during that period and the eastbound train came through about 1/2 hr after I shot this. The depot was razed a few years after this.

Derailment repair near Westminster.
Title:  Derailment repair near Westminster.
Description:  After a heavy rain in St. Paul, a westbound train heading through the tunnel on the right, hit a stretch of track submerged under 3 or 4 feet of water! Luckily, the power made it through, but an empty flat car pontooned off its trucks and several other cars followed it off the tracks. The BN has pulled the mess and track out of the way and is now preparing to lay a new Main 1 through the area.

Track work
Title:  Track work
Description:  The MTM/Zephyr had a large challenge when BN donated the line in 1983. In one mile there 7 or more curves with worn rail and ties. After a minor derailment of the Zephyr shortly after start up on this curve, which was the longest on the RR, contractors were hired to gut it and replace all the outside rail and alot of the ties and put gauge bars in it. The museum spent over $150,000 bringing the line back up to class 2 standards.
