Description:  NST. Here is an image of a photo by Tom Lyman that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in June of 1949. Shown here are two Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives ~ a "Texas" and a "Decapod" ~ pushing a freight train past SLOPE Tower and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona. Description:  NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5844 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. #5844 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling an 11-car passenger train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to Altoona and points East. Note that the "B" unit still sports a very-weathered version of its original livery: DGLE or "Dark Green Locomotive Enamel."

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6401, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during May of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. It is pulling a freight train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and will soon pass under the 24th Street Bridge on its way to Altoona and points East.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6421, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during July of 1943 and retired in April of 1958. It is pulling a mixed-cargo freight train under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The signal bridge supports the home signals for SLOPE Tower, which is barely visible just beyond the Bridge. Produced and distributed by Audio-Visual Designs. (SFM)

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8506, #5857, and an E-7 Class "B" unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #8506 is an ES-15M built in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #5857 is an EP-20 built in February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They have just passed under the 24th Street Bridge with a passenger train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Pittsburgh and points West.

They are pulling a merchandise train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to the Enola Yards. Note the brakemen riding atop the box cars!

Shown here are two eastbound Pennsylvania Railroad trains about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way into Altoona. On the right (R to L) are PRR engines #5834 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5834 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. On the left (R to L) are PRR engines #5764 and an E-8 Class "A" unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9710 is a BF-16 built in December of 1950, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 16 years of revenue service. This A-B set has just passed the Brick Yard Crossing with a mineral train on their way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.

In this context, they're passing SLOPE Tower with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible at the right is the pit where a turntable was once situated; it was used to turn returning steam locomotives around in preparation for their next helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
