Album Info:For the past couple months Ethan and I have had a 4 day trip planned to the cheese state for some train photography and hopefully some changing leaves. We ended up coming away with some awesome grabs and overall had a spectacular time! I spent most of the first day by myself as Ethan was still in school until 4. After he was done at school we began the trip, watching trains along the way to Janesville where we spent the first night. Enjoy!

NS 1071 (CNJ Heritage Unit!)
Title:  NS 1071 (CNJ Heritage Unit!)
Description:  Today began a four day stretch of train fun with Ethan as we embark on a Fall getaway to the state of Wisconsin. We are traveling to Janesville, WI tonight, but since he has school today, I get to spend most of the day by myself photographing trains. To make it easier for him, however, I would be slowly making my way toward Logansport where we would get together and continue on our way west and north. Right as I got up I noticed on both Facebook and Heritage Units.Com that NS 1071, the Central Railroad of New Jersey Heritage Unit was front and center on todays NS 148. A crew had already been called and put on the train out of Peru so I wasnt sure if I would beat them to Aboite. I got right on the road and noticed a green signal at the west side of Roanoke. I parked on CR 1100N just southwest of Aboite and waiting. Sure enough, no more than a couple minute later I heard "NS 148 clear Roanoke" ring over the radio. I set up in the perfect spot to get a nice shot in the rising sun near the Little River just behind me. A perfect way to start a trip in my opinion.

NS 1071 (CNJ Heritage Unit!)
Title:  NS 1071 (CNJ Heritage Unit!)
Description:  The train had to make a stop at Aboite to await the arrival of NS 35N coming west which gave me a chance to get back ahead of the train. However, the dispatcher came over the radio minutes later and told NS 148 that they would receive a light east as NS 35N was experiencing engine troubles. NS 1071 eventually took off with the train in tow, popping between shadows as some foliage begins to pop up on the leaves.

Title:  NS 1210
Description:  Things were relatively quiet after NS 148 so I began the trip west. I decided I would stop in Peru for a little bit and sure enough, upon arriving, a massive NS 32N was coming in for a crew change.

TPW 3046
Title:  TPW 3046
Description:  The night before I was looking on Facebook and noticed that TPW 3046 was sitting out near the grain elevator with some cars. I thought there might be a chance that the engine would still be out there and possibly there would be a crew on board, so I decided to go straight to Clymers to see. Sure enough my assumptions were correct and the engine was building a train.

Title:  TPW 3046
Description:  Instead of backing up down to the siding and running around the train which I had figured they would do, the train pulled up completely into Clymers with a healthy cut of tank cars. A run down the Bringhurst Branch was looking quite possible!

Title:  TPW 3046
Description:  And sure enough a change in plans to the day was made! The signal across the diamond with NS lit green and the train was on its way to Bringhurst. From what I was told most times this job is done at night. Perfect light down a branch I havent shot anything on yet? Not missing out on this!

Description:  The train continues through Camden passing the Camden Grain elevator which unfortunately sits off of the mainline a little too much. My assumption is at one time there was a spur that led to it, and where I am sitting now was probably where the passenger depot was located.

Title:  TPW 3046
Description:  The train arrives as the Fertilizer Depot south of Bringhurst, the sole business along this line south of Clymers and the reason for its existence. This time of year tank cars are in and out of here quite frequently. There have been rumors that there will be more development along this line and it will be extended back to Frankfort in the future, but as of now those are just rumors.

TPW 3441
Title:  TPW 3441
Description:  We got our stuff gathered together and began to head west following the TP&W. Ethan had received word from his engineer friend that works on the TP&W that they were running a train east to Logansport today from Hoosier Lift so it gave us a good reason to follow the line. We made it as far as Idaville and sure enough the train rolled by us at a fairly good clip. We were able to make it back to Burnettsville and set up by the community park and gazebo.

UP 7483
Title:  UP 7483
Description:  We considered chasing the TP&W train a little further east but decided to not so we could arrive in Janesville at a decent time. We saw on Facebook that the UP 1111, Power By Our People, unit was mid train DPU on a northbound manifest on the Joint Line, so we made a dash for Watseka and were indeed greeted by a green signal for a northbound. Being fairly confident that this was the train with the engine, we decided to wait. After some time a northbound manifest popped around the corner with 2 armour yellow GEs leading a Ferromex SD70ACe.

Title:  UP 1111 (Power By Our People!)
Description:  And sure enough our intuition was correct! The Power By Our Furlou.... I mean Our People Unit was indeed the Mid Train DPU. Quite a joke in the face of the UP employees that were laid off days before this was revealed, but an interesting looking engine nonetheless.

BNSF 6413
Title:  BNSF 6413
Description:  Nothing was on the CN at Gillman so at that point we decided to just head north to I39 and begin the trek into Janesville. However, when we crossed over the Transcon outside of Wenona, an eastbound Z train was coming under at the exact same time, which convinced Ethan to stop and see if we could grab a train before it got too dark. We got off the highway and went a little west of town before parking. Ethan got out his laptop and checked the Chillicothe West ATCS and sure enough we did have a westbound coming. About 10 minutes later a westbound Z screamed by us at 70 MPH with 4 GEs on the point. The sun peaked through the clouds at the right moment too giving us the nice "golden hour" light.

WAMX 4183
Title:  WAMX 4183
Description:  There were more trains approaching on the Transcon but it was beginning to get dark so we thought it was best for us to continue our way. We made one last stop in Rochelle to get food at Wendys then continued north. I fell asleep for most of the ride up there, but Ethan awoke me in Janesville when he began to have extreme road rage (he missed our exit in town and road construction made it so we had to make a giant detour). Despite the set backs, we did make it to our hotel, and we decided to then go out to the WSOR Yard in Janesville to see if any power was lying around. Sure enough there was, so we snapped what we could from the street that goes right by the roundhouse.

WAMX 4197
Title:  WAMX 4197
Description:  Some engines were also inside the roundhouse which were visible from the outside windows such as this SD40-2. After some more photo taking a crew came out of the yard office and talked with us for a bit. They would be taking the 30th Anniversary SD40-2 to Milton to work some various industries. We were also told by the crew that we needed to be in Hartford, WI on Sunday around 9 AM for a "special move". We were unsure what that meant, but it aligned with our hotel stays well so we would be there. The crew hopped in the engine and began doing yard work. Unfortunately for me I had forgotten both my camcorder and my camera flash so I ended up getting nothing of the moves which disappointed me, but we planned to follow the WSOR most of the day tomorrow so hopefully I will have better luck. As for that our first day of the trip was over. We are staying in the Hampton Inn tonight then we will be beginning our day along the WSOR and following it to the CN in Waukesha! A very good first day!
