Dates:1/23/1980 - 1/23/1980
Album Info:This switcher, a Baldwin S-12, was in the former C&O yards in Huntington, WV in early 1980. What, if anything happened to that unit while in Huntington is not known to me but it did leave, heading east, probably back to home rails but that's not certain either. According to "Diesels From Eddystone (Kalmbach, 1984) this unit, builder's number 76010 was originally Monongahela 419. Dates are approximate.

Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Description:  Madison Mine, a Baldwin S-12 switcher, was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980 (before March, certainly). The reason why this Baldwin was in the C&O yards is unknown to me. C&O 8248 hovers in the background. The cloudy sky obscures the stark black and white of the engine, lettering, and white stripe along the side sill.

Madison Mine #1, front and engineer's side view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, front and engineer's side view
Description:  This view of Madison Mine #1 shows the later Baldwin flat nose (compared to the rounded fronts of the VO series). I don't know if the double-beam headlight was original Baldwin or changed at a previous date. A trio of C&O diesels are about ready to couple to this unit and head east. The exact date is not certain.

Madison Mine #1, engineer's cab exterior
Title:  Madison Mine #1, engineer's cab exterior
Description:  In the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980, Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12, is about to be coupled to C&O 8248 and two other engines. Note the white handrails or grab irons in front of the engineer's front cab window, I don't know why the cab windows were open--it was COLD that day!

Madison Mine #1, fireman's/brakeman's side
Title:  Madison Mine #1, fireman's/brakeman's side
Description:  This view of Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12, shows the fireman's/brakeman's side view. Note the open doors (I don't know why they were open) and the obvious plastic wrap secured with masking tape around the exhaust stack. Someone (whimsically?) had written "C&O MARK OF EXCELLENCE" in the dirt on the side sill!

Madison Mine #1, builder's plate and bell
Title:  Madison Mine #1, builder's plate and bell
Description:  It's a little hard to read but this is the builder's plate for Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12. Having zoomed in before, I figured this is Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton builder's number 76010. You can see the Baldwin circle and Lima diamond shapes. Sorry that I couldn't grab any more info, however, Dolzall and Dolzall list 76010 as the original Monongahela 419 in their book "Diesels from Eddystone (Kalmbach, 1984)" When this unit was transferred to Madison Mine #1 from the Monongahela is not known. The bell, painted black, is mounted on the frame. Sure wish I could have heard that one!

Madison Mine #1, front view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, front view
Description:  I was able to snag this front view of Madison Mine #1 while it was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Various items visible are the headlight, closed radiator shutters, handrails (some white, some black), drop step (that looks a little high above the rails to me), coupler, pilot, other fittings, but no footboards.

Madison Mine #1, fireman's cab exterior
Title:  Madison Mine #1, fireman's cab exterior
Description:  A pair of C&O employees take a (last?) look at Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Something I just noticed is what might be a rolled-up something or other above the cab windows. Any idea what that might have been?

Madison Mine #1, rear view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, rear view
Description:  Madison Mine #1 was a Baldwin S-12, in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. This view shows the cab's rear view. Note that there's only one wiper and that's on the engineer's window.

Madison Mine #1, air tank?
Title:  Madison Mine #1, air tank?
Description:  I'm not sure but this was probably one of the air tanks for Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980 (date is uncertain). These tanks (another one is on the other side) are between the trucks; the cab is at the rear (left).

Madison Mine #1, control stand
Title:  Madison Mine #1, control stand
Description:  This was literally a grab shot of the cab interior of Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 which was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Full disclosure: there is a duplicate of this scan in another location on this site. The interior is painted in as best I can tell a creamy white or off-white and a reddish color similar to Frisco (TM) red on the lower section.

Title:  Madison Mine #1, front and fireman's side view
Description:  Three C&O units have coupled to Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Soon they'll couple to a caboose, just out of sight to the left.

Madison Mine #1, in transit
Title:  Madison Mine #1, in transit
Description:  This is the last photo for this batch and it's one of the saddest, IMO. Madison Mine #1 is in transit, headed east, on the former C&O mainline in Huntington, WV in early 1980. I don't know this unit's final disposition. At any rate, when C&O was basically GE and EMD powered, a Baldwin, even as a guest, was something worth noticing!
