Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  Stadler and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) presented Stadler's first hydrogen FLIRT at Berlin InnoTrans 2022. The FLIRT H2 for the SBCTA is the latest addition to Stadler's alternative drive portfolio. In 2024, it will be the first hydrogen train in American passenger service to enter service in California. Between December 2022 and May 2023 it makes shuttle running test on a non-electrified museum line track of 4 km / 2.5 miles in Switzerland.

Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  Here we come to San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA)! The vehicle must be pollution-free, work in high heat (of up to 49 degrees Celsius / 120 degrees Fahrenheit) and drive for a day without refuelling. There the train will cover 14.5 kilometre / 9 miles route up to 16 times a day without having to refuel. So far, diesel-electric trains have been running there.

Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  The entire hydrogen technology is housed in the Power Pack, from the fuel cells to the hydrogen tanks. This means that the hydrogen technology is clearly separated from the passenger compartments of the train. The unit produced for SBTCA consists of two cars, but the vehicle’s scalable power pack can be adapted to drive up to four cars. In addition, the FLIRT H2 will be available with a pantograph, enabling it to operate with optimum energy efficiency on routes with electrified sections.

SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  The first FLIRT H2 consists of two electrically powered end cars and a power pack in the middle. This power pack contains the fuel cells and hydrogen tanks. The fuel cells convert the hydrogen into electricity. This current is passed on to a traction battery. The battery then supplies the vehicle's drives with the energy they need. This configuration also enables recuperation when braking (drawings by Stadler).

Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  The hydrogen tank are made of carbon fibres. Such a tank cannot explode. They are designed in such a way that a truck traveling at 75 kph / 47 mph can crash into the side of the train without being damaged. There are strict regulations of the approval authorities in the USA. However, if hydrogen escapes during loading, it escapes into the air, unlike diesel or petrol, which spreads out on the ground.

Title:  SBCTA FLIRT-H2 501 001
Description:  Because Southern California transit authorities are already using Stadler FLIRT diesel multiple units (DMU) on the Redlands passenger rail corridor for their Arrow service and the DMUs need to upgrade to zero-emissions technology, SBCTA decided to stick with Stadler's best-selling FLIRT for passenger service: In November 2019, SBCTA partnered with Stadler to design and build the first hydrogen-powered FLIRT. The train with 108 seats was created within three years. The maximum speed is 130 kph / 80 mph. SBTCA has currently ordered one FLIRT H2 hydrogen train to join its fleet of FLIRT diesel multiple units (DMUs). In addition, a memorandum of understanding was signed at InnoTrans, where Caltrans and CalSTA are asking for 4 four-car hydrogen FLIRTs, with an option for 25 more.
