Album Info:Every year I try to make a Longest Day Trip to a well known railfan hotspot. This year, I decided to head out to Deshler, OH where the CSX Garrett and Toledo Subs cross one another. Deshler has always been known as a big train hotspot, and with PSR well into its full swing, I was curious to see how many trains really are running on a given day. Enjoy! (I realize June 20th technically wasn't the Longest Day of the Year, rather the day before the Longest Day, but I had prior plans for the day after. Forty-Five Seconds isn't that big of a difference anyway.)

Description:  My June vacation had finally arrived. My dad and I usually go out to Galesburg during the 3rd week of June. But, usually I have a little time to do some other railfanning activities closer to home, including my yearly "Longest Day" Trip. This year I had selected Deshler, OH to be the hotspot I would visit. I had intended on being in Deshler right at sunrise, but a mere 4 miles outside of Hamler and I heard the IORY Defect Detector go off around Liberty Center. Looking at the clock I noticed that it was the right time for IORYs daily freight to Delta to come back south. I went back and didnt see the train. I almost gave up when I heard the radio controlled crossing go off at Malinta, which gave me a sure sign that the LNL was coming. I missed a southbound on the Toledo Sub, but it did pay off seeing the 3 ex-UP SD60Ms and the ex-BN SD40-2 struggle out of Hamler with their 422 axle train. Glad to see one of the "nicer" UP units leading today.

Description:  Unfortunately the local had a GEVO today as there was a W943 scheduled to go south the day after. The unit dropped off its consist on the main, then ran down the siding to assist mechanical with an autorack that M209 had bad ordered the night before. The unit pulled up to the reservoir signals then reversed into the siding. The train still had work to do north of Deshler in Custar, but the unit would be wyed around the southwest and southeast wyes before it would continue north long hood forward.

Description:  Unfortunately W014 was short enough to allow 2 trains coming into Deshler on the Garrett/Willard Subs to not have to stop. It was either shoot a very backlit B158 going east, or shoot a better lit I171 with BNSF power going west. I chose CSX I171. I had to do a little chasing, but I got far enough out ahead of it to shoot it across a field about 2 miles west of town.
