Title:  CSS 1
Description:  Day 2 of the Galesburg Trip started with breakfast at the hotel, then a quick decision on where we would start the day. Since we were up in the Chicagoland area, we decided to head over to the Hammond area for some Indiana Harbor Belt action. Since US 20 follows the South Shore into Hammond, we managed to see an Electric MU parked on the stub track at the Hammond/Whiting station awaiting use again on another commuter run. I cant say Ive ever seen CSS 1 before.

CN 3222
Title:  CN 3222
Description:  After scouring both ends of the massive IHB Gibson Yard, we werent able to find any traces of IHB power, so we decided to go down to CP Hohman where the IHB crosses the NS Chicago District. Trains are an almost constant flow through this interlocking, as we ended up missing an inbound BNSF autroack train while trying to get placed. A CN B790 was parked in the Calumet City Yard awaiting to be taken into the Potash Corp of America just a few miles further to the east by an IHB crew. A nice CN 100 GEVO/KCS duo made for an interesting lashup to start the day.

NS 6713
Title:  NS 6713
Description:  We heard NS speaking with a train at State Line. I was still trying to figure out all the locations on ATCS, and I had just assumed that they were talking to the potash train, as we saw a new crew arrive when we got there. We heard a horn to our north, and unfortunately for us, NS was apparently talking with a local on the NS Chicago District. Our reaction time was too slow, and we only managed to get crap shots of NS BE08, surprisingly really moving it our across the diamond eastward. The ECO rebuilds are not around home, so it wouldve been nice to have gotten a better shot, but oh well.

IHB 3802
Title:  IHB 3802
Description:  While going to get my roster shots I noticed extra headlights down the tracks to the east at the entrance of the yard, so we knew finally that some pulldowns had become visible. We went down to the yard entrance and found two different pulldowns, the first using a solo Geep.

IHB 1508
Title:  IHB 1508
Description:  The other one was using one of the newer hydrogen locomotives. While I had seen one in action before, my dad never had. He was quite impressed, especially by how quiet it was. It definitely does not sound like your typical train engine!

IHB 1510
Title:  IHB 1510
Description:  After getting shots of the pulldowns we moved back to Hohman to wait on some more trains. I was starting to understand the lay of the land on ATCS a bit better and I knew we had 3 more trains coming west. CN B790 left when we got back, and that ended up meeting a sole IHB switcher going west. I thought the head on shot looked a little awkward so I just went with a roster.

NS 7132
Title:  NS 7132
Description:  The next westbound was almost directly behind the switcher. NS BH16 was next with a solo GP60 and 5 bottle cars, which completely caught us off guard. Neither I or my dad have ever shot a bottle train before. An almost surreal moment! They are really neat and unique trains!

CN 3180
Title:  CN 3180
Description:  Since we were staying in Morton, IL at the Holiday Inn outside of Peoria, we thought it would be natural to follow the CN south to Gilman then follow the TPW over toward Peoria. We started our time on the IC at the main classification yard in Homewood. Things were very dead upon arrival, but we knew we had CN L515 coming north, which usually sports IC SD70s. Unfortunately for us, as it got closer, CN Q119 pulled out of the yard to double up its train. The main parking at the gazebo was closed for construction and we had to park much closer to the yard lead than what we usually would. The odds of the intermodal train eclipsing the local were quite high now.

IC 1021 and CN 3180
Title:  IC 1021 and CN 3180

CN 3244
Title:  CN 3244
Description:  After L515 yarded things became very dead. We decided to move over to the shadow side of the tracks on the Metra/Amtrak platform to avoid any Metras being eclipsed by the stack train. Eventually the stack train finished doubling and took off. A near identical GEVO brought up the rear.

IC 1026
Title:  IC 1026
Description:  The outbound CN L515 builds in the yard with a pretty eclectic mix of IC power. Unfortunately this is the closest they would get before the train would tie down for the crew to hop on. And we would not wait that long.

IDTX 4612
Title:  IDTX 4612
Description:  We made a quick bathroom stop at the Walgreens in Homewood then continued south. We noticed that the northbound Illini was coming, so we decided to try to get as far south as we could. University Park was all the farther we got before the train caught us, screaming north into the Chicagoland area at 79 MPH. Not sure what was up with the double chargers and larger consist, but it pretty neat!

NS 8087
Title:  NS 8087
Description:  CN was still quite slow so we decided to make a stop at the antique mall in Manteno. After looking around and buying a couple items, we continued south. When we got into Kankakee we heard westbound NS local B12 key up Homewood to ask for permission across the diamond in town. He had some MOW to clear up first, but the train still pulled by some really old abandoned buildings on the east side of town. Always wanted to catch a train in this spot. Maybe not with this leader, but the backdrop makes up for it!

IC 9607
Title:  IC 9607
Description:  At about the same time, CN R960, the Kankakee Local, was ready to head south back to the stub track in downtown to tie down for the day. We raced over there, but unfortunately we were not quick enough to get shots of them coming by the station. The blue GT wouldve been a nice addition to the already very good day, but you dont win them all. At least we did see the engines moving.

IC 1039
Title:  IC 1039
Description:  After looking at all there was to see west of town, we knew we would just have to play catch up for A407, as nothing else was poised to come our direction. We went and got "lupper" (as we like to call it) at the Dairy Queen in Clifton, then continued south. Not even 2 minutes after we were out of the drive thru, A407 screamed north, unfortunately with a repaint IC SD70 leading the deathstar. It took some effort, but we made it back to Chebanse in time to grab it coming by the IC depot.

TPW 5010
Title:  TPW 5010
Description:  We had heard TPW working in the Gilman area since we left Kankakee. Since there was nothing going on after A407, we made the dash south to Gilman. Sure enough, the Indiana Local was sorting out Incobrasa cars on the west side of town with one of the GP50s leading a pair of SD40-2s. With a little bit of patience, we were able to get the train with the classic trilight signal that provides as a distant signal with the diamond in town. This was a real win.

UP 1202
Title:  UP 1202
Description:  With the sun setting and CN and TPW all quiet, we decided it was time to head west toward our hotel. US 24 is the best route to take into Peoria from Gilman, so we ended up following the tracks, despite the M train being tied down in La Hogue. We made one final stop in Cruger to take photos of the UP end cab switcher that is used to work the elevator before calling it a day. To say we really made up for yesterday would be an understatement. What a day! Hoping tomorrow is just as good!
