ICG E-UNITS
Title:  ICG E-UNITS
Description:  Illinois Central E8A 4023, E9B 4108 and E8A 4022 sit on a ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and will depart shortly on Amtrak's PANAMA LIMITED. Trailing unit 4022 was one of at least six IC E-units that were repainted in Amtrak colors while on lease to the national carrier until the delivery of new SDP40F units later in 1974. Amtrak leased these units from IC and then ICG units because they were equipped with Automatic Train Control for use in ATC territory between Champaign and Centralia.

Caboose Hop
Title:  Caboose Hop
Description:  The IC/ICG/CN serves five big grain elevators along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. These locomotives had just delivered a grain train to one of those elevators, and were heading south to Mays Yard near New Orleans to tie up. The units were IC SD40A 6013, ICG (ex-GM&O) SD40 6067 and IC SD40A 6018, with ICG caboose 199311. At this time, this was a common set of power for grain trains, with a former GM&O SD40 bracketed by SD40A's.

With a consist like this, all three units had dynamic brakes; and one of the SD40A's would always lead. The SD40A's had Automatic Train Stop (ATS) equipment, and could run all the way from New Orleans to Chicago. Only specially-equipped locomoitves could lead trains through the ATS territory between Champaign and Centralia; and if the lead unit on a train was not an ATS loco, one would have to be added. The ATS was deactivated in 1991, when the railroad was single-tracked and equipped with Centralized Traffic Control.

Grain Train
Title:  Grain Train
Description:  An interesting assortment of locomotives lead a southbound grain train across Pass Manchac, about 40 miles north of New Orleans. When this photo was taken, grain trains usually ran with a caboose on each end, as the power had to run around the train in Kenner before heading up the former Y&MV line to the elevators along the Mississippi River.

IC 13
Title:  IC 13
Description:  IC SW1R 13 switches the McKesson Chemical Co. along Leake Avenue. The locomotive was built in June 1946 as IC 9027, and was renumbered 612 in October 1953. The railroad extensively rebuilt the locomotive in October 1968, replacing its 6-cylinder 600-horsepower prime mover with an 8-cylinder 1,000-horsepower one, and renumbered it 13. It was to be the prototype for the rebuilding of the IC's entire fleet of SW1's, which would have been renumbered 1-17; but it was the only one done. It spent it later life in New Orleans, and was retired in 1988.

ICG 800
Title:  ICG 800
Description:  This SW8 was built in November 1952 as Tremont & Gulf 75, and became Illinois Central 800 after the IC bought the T&G in August 1959. It wore its IC black paint scheme well into the ICG era, and was repainted into the unusual -- and perhaps unique -- black ICG scheme in mid-1981. It also received full-length handrails at the same time. The unit was sold c. 1986.

Title:  IC 1244
Description:  IC 1244 was stopped at the south end of Baton Rouge Yard. That's the Louisiana state capitol behind the cab. The locomotive was built in June 1951 as IC 9446, was renumbered 446 so that the 9400-series could be used for GP18's, and then renumbered 1244 when it was equiped for multiple-unit operation. It was rebuilt as SW14 1449 the year after this photo was taken.

Export Coal Train
Title:  Export Coal Train
Description:  An ICG unit coal train was on the Nashville Avenue underpass as it entered the New Orleans Public Belt's Cotton Warehouse Yard. The coal was on its way from Illinois to Spain, and the NOPB would move the train to the Public Bulk Terminal -- along the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet -- for unloading. Motive power was provided by four PADUCAH REBUILDS: SD20's 2014, 2017, and 2011, along with GP8 7731.

Daylight and Green Diamond
Title:  Daylight and Green Diamond
Description:  We're standing along the parallel Illinois Central Gulf and New Orleans Public Belt tracks near Jefferson Avenue, where the two main lines of each railroad cross. ICG GP10 8114, SD20 2024 and GP40 3031 are heading away from us, going to Mays Yard after delivering intermodal train No. 55 to the railroad's IMX (InterModal eXchange) at Nashville Ave. and the Mississippi River. Espee 4449 is sitting on the New Orleans Public Belt westbound main track, after having spent a week on display at the 1984 Louisiana World's Fair. Earlier this morning an NOPB switch engine had moved it from the fair site to here, and it is waiting for an ICG switch engine to accompany it to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The Daylight and its matched set of cars left for home in Portland, Oregon the next morning. Daylight engineer Doyle McCormack has placed the number "5" in the locomotive's train numbers boxes. Number 5 was the westbound ARGONAUT, the secondary train between New Orleans and Los Angeles.

TWO GM CLASSICS
Title:  TWO GM CLASSICS
Description:  The picture quality isn't very good, but the subjects are superb! One fine day in 1968, a 1956 Chevy Corvette and a 1941 Electro-Motive Division E6A posed side-by-side at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The two E-units are on a ready track, and departed later that afternoon on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED. The 4003 has been recently repainted. It wears the large lettering and numbers introduced in 1967; but still has the old nose treatment, where the orange extends up over the top headlight. It should have a split-rail nose emblem, but one hasn't been applied yet! (month approximate)

IC SD40A 6011
Title:  IC SD40A 6011
Description:  An especially dirty Illinois Central SD40A 6011 sits outside the diesel shop at Mays Yard. The engine still has its L-shaped windshield and dynamic brakes, but has lost its Gyralight. Only 18 SD40A's were built, all for the IC in 1969 and 1970. They utilized the longer frame of the SDP45, so they could have 5,000-gallon fuel tanks. The switch engine in the background is SW1M number 13.

ICG Depot
Title:  ICG Depot
Description:  ICG GP8 7986 poses on the main line beside the depot at Arcadia, Louisiana; on the Vicksburg-Shreveport line. Notice all of the LNG tank cars on the depot house track. Today this line is the KCS/NS Meridian Speedway.

Arcadia is the seat of Bienville Parish, and achieved some notoriety on 23 May 1934 after the infamous outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow had an unfortunate encounter with some law enforcement officers near here. After the shoot-out, the outlaws' bodies were brought here to Conger's Funeral Home for embalming. The "Barow Gang" had just robbed a bank in Gibsland, eight miles away, and met their demise southwest of Arcadia on Louisiana State Highway 154. Another Bienville Parish landmark is Driskill Mountain, about ten miles to the south. At 535 feet, it is the highest natural point in the state of Louisiana.
