ICG E-UNITS
Title:  ICG E-UNITS
Description:  Illinois Central E8A 4023, E9B 4108 and E8A 4022 sit on a ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and will depart shortly on Amtrak's PANAMA LIMITED. Trailing unit 4022 was one of at least six IC E-units that were repainted in Amtrak colors while on lease to the national carrier until the delivery of new SDP40F units later in 1974. Amtrak leased these units from IC and then ICG units because they were equipped with Automatic Train Control for use in ATC territory between Champaign and Centralia.

ICG Special
Title:  ICG Special
Description:  The ICG's second Bicentennial GP38 1776 (ex-9503) and GP38-2 9615 head out of New Orleans on the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal's WESTERN CONNECTION. The train is crossing the drainage canal that seperates the City of New Orleans -- on the right-- from suburban Metairie. The wooden bridge in the background belongs to the Kansas City Southern. As I recall, the purpose of the train was to promote industrial development along the railroad between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

ICG Grain Train (1)
Title:  ICG Grain Train (1)
Description:  Illnois Cenral Gulf GP10 8216, SD40 6056 and U33C 5058 were on a southbound grain train crossing the bridge across Pass Manchac, Louisiana. The new concrete structure was completed in 1972 and replaced the wooden trestle next to it. The train will have to reverse direction in Kenner, just west of MAYS YARD, to get to one of the grain elevators along the Mississippi River, so it has a caboose on each end. The 199510 is behind the engines and the 199596 is on the rear.

Grain Train
Title:  Grain Train
Description:  An interesting assortment of locomotives lead a southbound grain train across Pass Manchac, about 40 miles north of New Orleans. When this photo was taken, grain trains usually ran with a caboose on each end, as the power had to run around the train in Kenner before heading up the former Y&MV line to the elevators along the Mississippi River.

Caboose Hop
Title:  Caboose Hop
Description:  The IC/ICG/CN serves five big grain elevators along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. These locomotives had just delivered a grain train to one of those elevators, and were heading south to Mays Yard near New Orleans to tie up. The units were IC SD40A 6013, ICG (ex-GM&O) SD40 6067 and IC SD40A 6018, with ICG caboose 199311. At this time, this was a common set of power for grain trains, with a former GM&O SD40 bracketed by SD40A's.

With a consist like this, all three units had dynamic brakes; and one of the SD40A's would always lead. The SD40A's had Automatic Train Stop (ATS) equipment, and could run all the way from New Orleans to Chicago. Only specially-equipped locomoitves could lead trains through the ATS territory between Champaign and Centralia; and if the lead unit on a train was not an ATS loco, one would have to be added. The ATS was deactivated in 1991, when the railroad was single-tracked and equipped with Centralized Traffic Control.

IC 13
Title:  IC 13
Description:  IC SW1R 13 was switching the McKesson Chemical Co. along Leake Avenue in New Orleans. The locomotive had been built in June 1946 as IC 9027, and was renumbered 612 in October 1953. The railroad extensively rebuilt the locomotive in October 1968, replacing its 6-cylinder 600-horsepower prime mover with an 8-cylinder 1,000-horsepower one, and renumbered it 13. It was to be the prototype for the rebuilding of the IC's entire fleet of SW1's, which would have been renumbered 1-17; but it was the only one done. It spent its later life in New Orleans, and was retired in 1988.

ICG Derailment
Title:  ICG Derailment
Description:  ICG crane 100408 helps clean up the mess after six cars on southbound piggyback train P-55 derailed at East Bridge Junction. The crane was built by the Industrial Works of Bay City, Michigan in August 1918 as IC X-99. It was subsequently renumbered IC X-111 and then ICG 100408, and is now owned by the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. The yellow backhoe is on the ICG main line and the crane is on the NS-ICG interchange track, while the UP units on the right were on the New Orleans Public Belt.

ICG Piggyback Power
Title:  ICG Piggyback Power
Description:  At 5 PM on a Saturday afternoon a trio of Illinois Central Gulf units - GP40 3033, GP38-2 9602 ABRAHAM LINCOLN, and GP40R 3104 - were southbound at Eagle Street, on their way from Mays Yard to the railroad's intermodal facility at Stuyvesant Docks Yard to pick up an outbound piggyback train. For about 25 years the locomotives for the IC and ICG piggyback trains would run light between Mays Yard, where the units were serviced, and the intermodal terminal (and vice versa); but this practice was eliminated by fueling the engines on the southbound train at McComb and then letting the power sit at Stuy Docks Yard. The two tracks on this side of the engines belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, and the empty space in the foreground had accommodated two NOPB-KCS interchange tracks which were removed around 1980.

IC Piggyback Power
Title:  IC Piggyback Power
Description:  At 9:30AM on this bright Sunday morning Illinois Central GP40R 3105, GP38 9534 and GP38-2 9571 had delivered an intermodal train to the railroad's IMX (Intermodal eXchange) along the Mississippi River at STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD and were returning to MAYS YARD where the crew would go off duty and the geeps would be serviced. In the early evening, a crew would go back on duty and deadhead back to the IMX for the northbound run. This long-standing practice was eliminated a few years later by fueling the units on the southbound train a McComb, and then leaving them at the IMX until departure. The geeps were crossing the New Orleans Public Belt at SOUTHPORT JUNCTION, but about six years later the NOPB installed a connection here with the IC and the crossings were eliminated.
