Album Info:Passenger coaches and motor coaches designed for commuter service. The older coaches are being shown here in three groups: those with all wooden bodies, those with sheathed wooden bodies, and the all metal group with hinged doors. With effect from the introduction of the Class 5M motor coaches with sliding doors, coaches and cab coaches were classed the same as their corresponding motor coaches (Class 5M to 10M). The Class 5M series is still in use country wide and first entered service in 1958. The first batch was imported (Class 5M2), and from 1961 onwards the rest were built by Union Carriage & Wagon (Class 5M2A). Having been in service for more than half a century, they have been much modified by now. The result is quite a confusing variety of appearances, especially amongst the motor coaches. In an effort to make sense of it all, I grouped the motor coaches into five types according to their exterior side appearance from front to back, as follows: .....oo....oo..... Type 1: The cab door, a double sliding door, a guard's periscope (often removed during later modifications), 3 windows, another double sliding door, and 2 more windows. .....oo....oo..... Type 2: The cab door, a single sliding door, a guard's periscope (often removed later), 4 windows, a double sliding door, and 2 more windows. .....oo....oo..... Type 3: The cab door, 5 windows, a double sliding door, and 2 more windows. .....oo....oo..... Type 4: The cab door, a double sliding door, 4 windows, another double sliding door, and 2 more windows. .....oo....oo..... Type 5: The cab door, one window, a double sliding door, 3 windows, another double sliding door, and 2 more windows. .....oo....oo..... There are more, but these are usually one-of-a-kind modifications, for example the Cape's Rainbow Commuter, the University on Wheels, etc. Also, even with the new Class 10M motor coaches there are already models with differences in appearance.

This picture shows Darwin Award candidates on the Kaalfontein to Tembisa run. Trainsurfing has become an often fatal fad around Johannesburg and the ultimate macho thing is to ride on the roof, standing upright while dodging catenary poles and keeping clear of the 3,000 volt cable while the train speeds along at between 80 and 100 km/h. Note the surfer in dark green between the second and third last coaches, whose feet are mere inches from the ballast, even with his knees pulled up.
