War Eagle!
Title:  War Eagle!
Description:  Before Terminal Railroad Alabama State Docks (TASD) went to black paint it had several units painted in the colors of the state's two major Universitys- either red/white for 'Bama or Orange/Blue for Auburn. SW1500 682 shows the Tigers' hues in 1978. Ten years in the Alabama sun has taken its toll on the paint job- it would soon be repainted in black. This is about as simple as an SW1500 can get, with a small fuel tank, hood-mounted hand rails and friction bearings.

Catch of the Day
Title:  Catch of the Day
Description:  October 1978: You're on a Saturday trip to see what the SCL and ASAB keep in Dothan AL and decide to troll along the Hartford & Slocomb RR, an obscure Alabama shortline. You find RS1 257 dozing at the end of the road's line in Hartford, and are insufferably pleased that it's in good condition, the sun angle is excellent and it's largely unobstructed. The unit is former Chicago & Western Indiana.

Amtrak 545 in Alabama
Title:  Amtrak 545 in Alabama
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F is the sole unit on train no.56, the northbound "Floridian" as it makes its station stop at Montgomery AL in January 1979. The "Floridian" was Amtrak's last attempt at a direct Chicago to Florida train; it was anulled only ten months later. Looking back now I wonder why I didn't shoot a picture of the whole train and the station; ah, but that's irrelevent now. As for this unit, the five-year old 545 has only a few months to go before it went back to EMD as trade bait for a new F40PH.

This is a dual-use rail and wheel traffic structure- note the two pickup trucks closely trailing caboose 206. But then again, this IS NASCAR country- and they might actually be drafting.

M&B crossing the Tombigbee-1
Title:  M&B crossing the Tombigbee-1
Description:  The Meridian & Bigbee runs east out of its Meridian MS home about 51 miles to a connection with the L&N at Myrtlewood Alabama. At milepost 46 it passes through Naheola AL and then crosses the Tombigbee River over a dual-use bridge. Here the daily freight is shown approaching the east end of the structure behind the usual two Geeps. Note the 10 ton bridge limit- which applies to wheel traffic and not the railroad. The red light signal is for road traffic.
