Album Info:At 12:25 PM, arriving Westbound on Track #1 was D021 a welded rail train. The power pulled past the MARC platform and the rear of the train cleared the signal then pulled to a stop. Comments from members of the work crew on top of a car in the middle of the train as it slowed indicated that this train was expected to lay rail at Halethorpe. The train was full, carrying forty mile lengths of 136# rail in 4 layers of 10 each. The train consisted of two locomotives, 33 modified gondolas, and a pair of unique cars at the rear of the train for guiding the rail off on to the roadbed. Instead of making the backup move to the Old Main Line, crewmembers congregated around the lead truck of CSXT 960560, the first guide car behind the rail load. As the afternoon progressed we learned that the rear axle of the lead truck had a defective break which had been held against the tire. The wheel had gotten so hot that the steel had started to melt and build up unevenly around the tire resulting in a very uneven rolling surface. A crewmember said you could hear it, smell it, and see the car jiggling as it traveled. A car maintainer was called from Baltimore and after careful study and consultation with the crew decided that the train could move onto the OML and unload the two rails partially already unloaded. As the train was not configured the rail could not be pulled back onto the train and the bad order car could not be uncoupled. The train crew moved the train forward & back thru about 10 car lengths while the car maintainer watched and we all listened to the ker-bang, ker-band, ker-bang of the wheel. At 15:00 D021 finally got a eastbound signal, pulled thru St.Denis and onto the Old Main Line.
