Album Info:Photos taken in Muscatine, Iowa and some taken in Muscatine County, Iowa. Muscatine's first railroad was the Rock Island in the 1850s. Today, I am not sure if any trace of the former Rock Island exists. Later, the Milwaukee Road went through Muscatine on its line from Chicago to Kansas City. There was a Milwaukee Road yard near the Mississippi River. Later, following MILW's bankruptcy, the Soo Line took over this line and later the CP spun this line off to the Iowa Montana Rail Link. Today, this line is run by the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern but is in the process of being repurchased by the Canandian Pacific. There are also some UP run through trains on this line. Also in Muscatine County is the former Rock Island Chicago-Omaha line now run by the Iowa Interstate.

CNW 880211
Title:  CNW 880211
Description:  Given the later appearance of a Marx train, it is interesting that a C&NW hopper shows up given that C&NW was a company with an ESOP (employee stock ownership plan for those who aren't as familiar with business and labor law) since that was one thing that Karl Marx's writings influenced, at least indirectly - the more moderate unions became an acceptable alternative to communism which the railroads having had a poor history of labor relations (see, e.g. the railroad strike of 1877 which began against the B&O in Martinsburg West Virginia and spread often becoming a general strike in much of Pennsylvania and the Pullman Strike in 1894 (I believe). Few Americans realize how close the United States came to having workers overthrow the government in the 1877 strike - if military reconstruction had not previously ended with the Republicans selling out their southern supporters (which were mainly Southern blacks at the time) in the stolen election of 1876 (which was eerily similar to the 2000 election right down to being decided in Florida) the U.S. may have lacked the troops to violently supress the general strike. Anyway, while law is my profession, labor and industrial history is my passion so I could talk all day about that. Anyway, here is the end of the empties.

UP 5976 Provides a Welcome Surprise
Title:  UP 5976 Provides a Welcome Surprise
Description:  The first of three trains in one hour along this line early Monday morning. I had literally just parked my car in the riverfront park when I heard the whistle (way softer than the IC&E SD40's that generally run through here) and saw the lights of this guy - got there just in time!). This was a load of empties headed towards Clinton, Iowa and eventually, the Powder River Basin for more coal.

This is Just a Test
Title:  This is Just a Test
Description:  If it was a real train photo, there would be information about what it was, however, this was just trying to see whether I would be able to get something from the train I heard approaching. BTW, I really recommend checking out http://www.conelrad.com for some great stuff about the "Golden Age of Homeland Security" and popular culture of the Atomic Age and early Cold War. Gee, anymore obscure references, and these photos will start to sound like an MST3K episode.

UP 7158 and 6173 take the MARX Brothers Along the IC&E
Title:  UP 7158 and 6173 take the MARX Brothers Along the IC&E
Description:  A unit coal train out of the Powder River Basin for some Mid-American Energy power plant someplace in Iowa. If anyone has any information or just wants to post their favorite lines from Marx Brothers movies (or the Karl Marx's Big Book of Fun (a.k.a. Das Kapital) let me know). All I know is that this train was loaded with coal and headed southwest from Clinton, Iowa. Also it was coming in a direction that it was backlit and I thought that this angle would be better than trying to shoot directly into the sun (which is rather bad for one's eyes). In the afternoon, this would be a great photo spot - I like the angle and the old factory and trees provide a backdrop

MARX 7567 (Groucho or Karl?)
Title:  MARX 7567 (Groucho or Karl?)
Description:  My favorite Groucho Marx quote: (as an attorney in court) "who are you going to believe, me or your eyes?" None of the lines in the Communist Manifesto or Das Kapital were that memorable but Karl's understanding of what industrialization was doing to society was very good, but his solution to the problems of capitalism left a lot to be desired. So Groucho wins.

Title:  All Hail Marx and Lennon (How can you be in two places where you are no place at all?)
Description:  Since I can't see any of the numbers of these MARX gondolas, I'll just make a Firesign Theatre reference. Who chooses reporting marks anyway, someone at Mid-American Energy had to know that these type of jokes would follow when they got the reporting mark MARX.

MARX 7534 (Duck Soup or The Communist Manifesto?)
Title:  MARX 7534 (Duck Soup or The Communist Manifesto?)
Description:  Looking at this reporting mark, I cannot decide whether to think Duck Soup or the Communist Manifesto. Given that Mid American Energy is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, probably Duck Soup is the more appropriate thought even though its hard to imagine Warren Buffet loosening up that much - he never struck me as a very humorous person. Yes, this reporting mark leads to this sort of thing.

Title:  MARX 7507 and several other MARX Brothers.

MARX 7536
Title:  MARX 7536
Description:  I keep typing in Mark as the reporting mark on these things - you know, Mark Marx (no relation to Groucho, Harpo, or Chico or Karl as far as I know). Hey, did you know that besides owning Mid-American Energy and GEICO, Berkshire Hathaway also owns Dairy Queen. Odd that one company would own both an electric company and Dairy Queen, but I'd never question whether Warren Buffet knows what he is doing.

DME 6362
Title:  DME 6362
Description:  the building in the background is some sort of apartment house - I'm not sure if it was always apartments or converted from a mansion - most of the big houses in Muscatine are up the hill on 2nd/3rd street where there is no risk of flooding and away from the industrial riverfront, so it may have been built as apartments. It looked much better here in 2008 than it did in 2010.
