CB&Q Class XML-1 23013
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-1 23013
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23013 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. From the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "Built in 1955 at Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska), the 100 cars of the Class XML-1, numbered #23000-23099 were all equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Loader Equipment.". The re-weigh date is: CH 7 77, although below the re-weigh stencil it is also stencilled: Fort Madison 6 68. I believe the trucks were known as Chrysler trucks, and once had a shock absorber (snubber) mounted in brackets between the coil springs, which have been removed by the time of this photo. There are two notes in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER): Note #4 says that cars in the 23000 to 23099 (among other numbers) are specially equipped with belt rails and cross bars. Note #19 says that this car specifically (23013, among other numbers mentioned) is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids, which will be considered part of the car. Of course, that was in 1971, and these items may or may not be present at this date (1981). This car also appears to acquired a replacement door during a shopping.

CB&Q Class XML-1 23040
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-1 23040
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23040 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 100 in the 23000-23099 number series built in the CB&Q shops, Havelock, Nebraska in 1955. They were equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Load Equipment, one rail divider can be seen in the open door, and the DF symbol is stencilled on the door. Originally painted in the 1955 standard mineral red paint scheme, this car apparently was shopped just before the BN merger of 1970, and received the pre-merger cascade green paint scheme. The re-weigh date is: BJ-3-77, and to the left of the door it is stenciled: When Empty Return to Agent - CB&Q RR Columbus Nebr.

CB&Q Class XML-5 23223
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-5 23223
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-5 23223 at Knoxville, Tennessee on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q's shops in Havelock, Nebraska built 73 (#23200-23272) of these XML-5 boxcars during November 1964. They were equipped with Keystone underframes, Evans DF-2 bulkheads, 10'0" door openings, and a 4974 cubic foot capacity. All 73 were in assigned service. This particular car is stenciled "Return Emply To Agent CMStP&P...." and I cannot make out the last line, but there was an interchange point between the Burlington and Milwaukee at Crawford, Wisconsin (Prairie Du-Chien), and the stencilling looks similar to that. It is definitely Wisconsin. The door is placarded CLAY PRODUCTS, so it was likely assigned to a clay products manufacturer in Wisconsin. This car still has its roofwalk at this late date.

This car was one of 200 outside braced boxcars built at CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops in 1967, numbered 23300-23499. It is stenciled BLT.8.67.HV, and was re-weighed SM-10-76. It was likely originally painted in the then-standand CB&Q Chinese Red paint scheme, and had a large metal herald on the right side. There is evidence of the attaching bolts and red paint on the rib just to the right of the door stops. It is seen here in the pre-merger paint scheme.

CB&Q XML-14 23389
Title:  CB&Q XML-14 23389
Description:  CB&Q XML-14 23389, Cicero, Illinois, March 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Mike Spoor, in his book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment" states, "In 1967 Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska) constructed 200 outside braced boxcars numbered #23300-23499 and classified XML-14. The Burlington, favoring Keystone cushion underframes and Evans bulkheads, installed them on these cars. This group of boxcars was the first to receive 10'0" plug doors. These XML-14 cars had an inside length of 49'6" and a capacity of 4,932 cu.ft. The majority of these cars were not in assigned service and consequently were called 'free runners'." The re-weigh date is: TX 1 77. This car is a bit unusual in that it is in full Burlington Northern paint, but has CB&Q reporting marks. One might speculate that this car was in the shops for repairs after the BN boxcar paint scheme was developed and implemented, but before the freight car re-numbering scheme was in place. And yes, the car behind is derailed.

CB&Q Class XM-33B 24000
Title:  CB&Q Class XM-33B 24000
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-33B 24000 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built at Havelock, Nebraska in 1956 by the CB&Q shops, this was the first of 350 class XM-33B cars numbered 24000-24349. They were delivered in the then-standard mineral red paint scheme with the slogan, "Way of the Zephyrs" painted on one side, and "Everywhere West" on the other. It was stenciled: CAPY 110000 XP, and Note H in the January 1969 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) says, "Cars in series 19840 to 19874 and 24000 to 24009 are equipped with moveable bulkheads." It was classed as an XL, AAR Code A220. However, in the October 1971 ORER, Note 8 reads, "Cars numbered 19840 to 19874, 24001, 24002, 24007, and 24009 are equipped with movable bulkheads." Cars 24000 and 24008 were classed XM, AAR Code B207. It is also stenciled: Hide Loading Only, so it likely has been demoted. Note 43 (5) says, "Individual numbers of cars in series 8000 to 8275, 9500 to 9749, 17000 to 19399, 21000 to 22899, 24000 to 24009, 24010 to 24649, 25500 to 25999, 26000 to 26999, 28000 to 28599, 29000 to 37759, 46900 to 46999, 48500 to 48599, 60000 to 62249 and 62500 to 63999 stenciled for hide and tankage loading and differing in A.A.R. Mech. Designation and pounds capacity from other cars in the same series: A.A.R. Mech. Designation XP, capacity 110,000 pounds:" It was last reweighed; SD 3-77. It must have been shopped at some point between roughly between 1968 and 1970, it has lost its roofwalk and is painted in the pre-merger green Burlington paint scheme. This car became BN 215950.

Description:  Bleeding off the air on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-33B 24001 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was the second of 350 class XM-33B 50 foot single 8 foot door boxcars turned out by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska in 1956. They were in the 24000-24349 number series, becoming BN 215950-216300. Delivered in Mineral Red paint with the slogan, "Way of the Zephyrs" on this side to the right of the door, and "Everywhere West" on the opposite side, this car has apparently been shopped sometime between 1968 and 1970, the roofwalk was removed, and it was painted in the pre-merger green paint scheme. The intention was to add the word NORTHERN below the BURLINGTON, but the type face was changed to a less-compact style by the time the merger was consumated. It is listed in the January 1969 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) as class XL, AAR A220, a note indicates that cars 24000-24009 are equipped with moveable bulkheads. In the October 1971 ORER it is shown as class XM, AAR 230.
