Album Info:Electric locomotives of Transnet Freight Rail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the former South African Railways, later Spoornet. Here is one picture of every South African electric locomotive I've ever photographed, A to Z by loco number, and here and there the same loco in a different paint scheme. I am receiving assistance from fellow railfans in the attempt to post a picture of each and every SA locomotive, most notably from Charles Baker, driver Noel Welch, John Middleton and an anonymous Railfan.

SAR Class 3E E201
Title:  SAR Class 3E E201
Description:  In 1947 and 1948 the South African Railways placed twenty-eight Class 3E electric locomotives with a Co+Co wheel arrangement in service. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers and built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns, they were numbered in the range from E191 to E218. Unlike later electric locomotives that used separate steam heating wagons on passenger service, the Class 3E had an integral steam boiler for train heating. Provision was also made for electric heating of passenger coaches, although this feature was never used.

Description:  Between 1952 and 1954 the South African Railways placed forty Class 4E electric locomotives with a 1Co+Co1 wheel arrangement in service, numbered in the range from E219 to E258. It was designed by the General Electric Company (GEC) and built by North British Locomotive Company. The Class 4E was amongst the most powerful electric locomotives in the world at the time and was specifically built for use on the main line from Cape Town through the proposed new Hex River tunnels to Touws River, but by the time the tunnel system was eventually opened in 1989, the Class 4Es were already retired after spending their entire careers double heading trains up the old Hex River rail pass.
