CB&Q E7 9931B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B on Train #15, the westbound Galesburg Local, east of Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was an accommodation train which departed Chicago at 6:20PM, stopping at La Vergne and Downers Grove before arriving at Aurora. These were likely stops for CB&Q employees. Number 15 continued on to Galesburg, making all the stops between. Train #15 (and its eastbound counterpart, Train #2) appeared in the CB&Q Employees Timetable #7 dated effective October 27, 1963, but not in the next timetable, #8, dated effective April 26, 1964, indicating that it was likely discontinued.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B on Train #2, the eastbound Galesburg Local, east of Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was an accommodation train making all the stops between Galesburg and Aurora. After Aurora it made just two stops before arriving in Chicago; Downers Grove and La Vergne. These were likely stops for CB&Q employees. Train #2 (and its westbound counterpart, Train #15) appeared in the CB&Q Employees Timetable #7 dated effective October 27, 1963, but not in the next timetable, #8, dated effective April 26, 1964, indicating that it was likely discontinued.

CB&Q E7 9931B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501), became BN 9912, and was scrapped April 26, 1972. It is equipped with two steam generators, the evidence being the rectangular exhaust stack to one side at the rear of the unit. It is seen here leading Train #2, the eastbound Galesburg Local, arriving at Union Station at 10:45 AM, according to the CB&Q Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #6, effective April 28, 1963. This train made most of the local stops between Galesburg and Aurora, stopping only at Downers Grove and La Vergne before the last stop in Chicago. It appears in Employees Timetable #7, effective October 27, 1963, but not in #8, effective April 26, 1964, suggesting that this train was cancelled.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9931A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931A on Train #10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois, April 21, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6500) on EMD Order E1006A, this locomotive became BN 9931 after March 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It was equipped with two Vapor Clarkson CFK 4225 steam generators. Some but not all of CB&Q's E7's were retro-fitted with stainless steel side panels. This locomotive retained its as-delivered Aluminum painted side panels to the end.

CB&Q E7 9931B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9912 sometime after the merger (March 2, 1970) and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It is seen here undergoing repairs at the Burlington's West Burlington shops. The occasion was steam fantrip powered by 4960, celebrating the birthday of 5632, which was also undergoing repairs at West Burlington. Although 9931B would be returned to service, 5632 would not.

CB&Q E7 9932B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9932B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9932B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6503) on EMD Order E1006A, it became BN 9913 and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co (after July, 1971, Precision National) on November 4, 1970. It is seen here heading a section of Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, east toward Chicago, about 28 miles from this point. I'm not sure, but this might be the second section of Number 10, since the class lights are not lit. The first car behind the motors (CB&Q term for locomotives) is a heavyweight Pullman, one of several Pullman sleepers purchased by the Burlington during 1948. Normally, heavyweight cars were not used on the Denver Zephyr, and this one was pressed into service as a dormitory car for the train crew (porters and dining car crew).

Built in March 1949 (c/n 6505), this locomotive became BN 9915 on March 2, 1970 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. I've marked the slide that this was Train Number 17, the California Zephyr. Generally speaking, the CZ did not have this much head end equipment, usually just a single stainless steel baggage car, so I assume the heavyweight baggage cars is a special move of some sort.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9934B eastbound on Train #18, the California Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois, January 2, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Train #18 departed Aurora at 1:20 PM, if on time, so this is about 1:30 or so in the afternoon. This train is about 29 miles away from completing its run of 2525 miles, having left Oakland, California two days earlier. This locomotive was built in May 1949 (c/n 8489) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9918 (3/2/1970), and was traded in on a order of SD45's on September 14, 1970.

Train #10 is seen here 29 miles away from completing its 1034 mile overnight run from Denver. It departed Aurora (about 10 miles to the west) at 8:32AM, so it's about 8:45 or so in the morning, if #10 is on schedule.

CB&Q E7 9935A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9935A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9935A eastbound on Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on September 12, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 8490), it became BN 9919 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. It is seen leading the Denver Zephyr east, about 28 miles left on the train's 1034 mile overnight journey. It was unusual for the CB&Q to leave the MU hatch open and the MU hoses in place on the front of the lead locomotive, suggesting that perhaps this was not the lead locomotive when it left Denver the previous day. One might speculate that perhaps the lead locomotive had a mechanical failure, or perhaps encountered a foreign object somewhere during the trip and was removed, and there was not sufficient time for the terminal crew to close the hatch and remove the hoses.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9935A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9935A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 26, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 8490) on EMD Order E1006A, it became BN 9919 after March 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering of Mount Vernon, Illinois on November 4, 1970. It is seen here leading Train Number 17, the westbound California Zephyr (CZ), the day after Christmas in 1965. Usually the CZ had two locomotives, and the addition of another would indicate extra passengers, and there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome.

Number 9935B is seen here leading Train Number 17, the westbound California Zephyr. Performing the roll-by inspection is my friend, Chris Burritt, who was employed by the Burlington during the summer of 1966 as relief telegraph operator, substituting for several regular operators as they took their vacation time.

CB&Q E7 9936A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9936A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9936A on Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, at Berwyn, Illinois on June 27, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Also seen in the distance is E8 9943A approaching the Berwyn station. This is a fortunate situation in that I generally took the train from Union Station, thus should have been aboard the approaching Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train). I happened to be visiting my friend Chris Burritt in Oak Park, and usually would backtrack by riding the CTA elevated train back into Chicago for the connection to the Q and ultimately, back to Naperville where I lived. But I was running late, so I took the bus down to the Berwyn station, where I caught this scene. I thought I could identify each train, but something is amiss in this shot. Looking at a 1965 calendar, this would be Sunday, which makes the Dinky a Sunday only all-stop train. I noted on the slide that the train led by 9936A is the Denver Zephyr. Here's the problem: according to my copy of the Employee's Timetable #10 in effect on this date, Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, departed Union Station at 5:00PM CST, and Train #225, the Sunday Only Dinky, departed at 5:01PM. Furthermore, the Dinky made five stops before arriving at Berwyn at 5:18. So, I am assuming the the DZ is running slightly late, not an unusual occurrence, especially in the summer, when often not only was it late departing, but sometime an overflow crowd of passengers would cause it to run in sections.

CB&Q E7 9936A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9936A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9936A eastbound with Train #10, the Denver Zephyr at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 8917) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9922 sometime after Mach 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering June 14, 1971. It was delivered with Aluminum painted side panels, and during a shopping, the painted panels were replaced with stainless steel laminate panels. Note that the trailing E7 has the original painted side panels. It was equipped with two steam generators. This is an extreme example of panning (moving the camera) to capture the moving subject. Unfortunately, everything else is blurred.

CB&Q E7 9937A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9937A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9937A eastbound on Train 2, the Galesburg Local, on April 1, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This train made all the station stops between Galesburg and Aurora. Attached to the rear of the train is car 100, CB&Q President Harry C. Murphy's private car. Train 2 does not appear in the CB&Q Employees Timetable No. 8, which became effective Sunday April 26, 1964, so I assume this train was discontinued 25 days after this photo was taken. This locomotive was built March 1949 (c/n 8919), became BN 9924 on March 2, 1970, sold for scrap April 26, 1972.

CB&Q E8 9937B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9937B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9937B at the Zephyr Pit near 14th Street in Chicago on Illinois, March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1949 (c/n 9674) on EMD Order 2012A for 19 E8's, it became BN 9937 and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. This was the lowest numbered E8 on the CB&Q, presumably the first one delivered. It was built with Aluminum painted side panels, and during shopping the panels on this locomotive were changed to a stainless steel/plywood sandwich. The E8 was the first passenger locomotive offerd by EMD with the option of dynamic brakes. The Burlington chose not to include this option, but instead had a 600 gallon water tank installed in the location that would have been occupied by the dynamics, supplementing the 1350 gallon underbody tank. The E8's were delivered with a 55:22 gear ratio, producing a top speed of 98 mph.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9937B, westbound at Naperville on Illinois, April 28, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the Burlington's first E8, built December 1949 (c/n 9674), numbered just one suffix letter above the last E7, 9937A, built nine months earlier. It was delivered with silver (Aluminum) painted side panels, but was fitted with stainless steel panels during shopping. It became BN 9937 on March 2, 1970, and was retired May 28, 1975, sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co. of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, later known as Precision National Corp..

CB&Q E8 9938A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9938A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E-8 #9938A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 21, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. A spotting feature of CB&Q E-8's and E-9's was the silver painted fourth porthole. I never determined a reason for that. Built December 1949 as CB&Q #9938A (c/n 9675), it became BN #9938. Around November 1973 it was sent to Morrison-Knudsen to be rebuilt to E-8u specs, exchanging its twin 12-567B model prime movers for 12-645EC's, and the electrical system was upgraded. In addition, the steam generators were replaced with a Cummins 500Kw generator for Head End Power (HEP). When it returned to BN rails (now numbered 9901) it was owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) and leased to the BN, and named "Village of Clarendon Hills". It worked suburban trains until July 1992 when it was retired, and eventually became Illinois Central #100. It is shown here at the head end of westbound CB&Q Train #1, The Denver Zephyr. The DZ left Chicago's Union Station daily at 5:00PM CST, this photo was taken in August, so Daylight Saving Time would make the time of the photo about 6:30PM. The train is a half hour into its overnight run to Denver, 1034 miles, due in Denver's Union Station at 10:40AM. Running two hours ahead of this train is the daily Train #17, The California Zephyr. The DZ's accommodations included: Reclining Seat Chair Cars (DZ-14, DZ-34, DZ-36, DZ-39), Vista-Dome Reclining Seat Chair Cars (DZ-14, DZ-35), [note; the DZ-14 was either a flat top coach or dome coach - depending on the season], Vista-Dome Buffet-Lounge Chair Car (DZ-37),Vista-Dome "Chuck Wagon" (lounge for all passengers), Dining Car, Slumbercoaches (SC-12, SC-19), Pullman Sleeping Cars (DZ-1, DZ-2, DZ-3, DZ-10), and a Vista-Dome Observation Lounge. The diner separated the coach passengers from the first class passengers. Depending on the passenger count, at least one Reclining Chair Car, one Slumbercoach, one Pullman Sleeping Car, and the Vista-Dome "Chuck Wagon", would be cut out of the DZ at Denver and attached to the D&RGW's "Royal Gorge" train and dropped off at Colorado Springs.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9939B at Naperville, Illinois on April 14, 1964, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I would speculate that this was Train Number 23, the Afternoon Zephyr, also known as the Twin Cities Zephyr. There were two Twin Cities Zephyrs in each direction every day, so they acquired the monikers Morning and Afternoon. I thought about cropping the photo better, but there is motion blur on the lead unit, so I decided to leave it as is.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9939A on Train Number 10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr (DZ) at Denver, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January, 1950 (c/n 9677) on EMD Order 2012A, sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger, this locomotive became BN 9939. In December, 1973, it was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho, returned as BN 9902, although it was actually owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District and leased to the BN. In December 1992 it was retired and it is now on display at the Saint Louis Museum of Transportation.

This photo opportunity is the result of my parents taking me on a round trip on the Denver Zephyr from Chicago to Colorado Springs in August 1964. While the Colordo Springs Connection cars were cut into the DZ, that took about an hour, I took photos. I spent the next 12 hours behind this locomotive set enjoying the ride back to Chicago.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9939B westbound on Train #17 at Naperville, Illinois on April 26, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Almost a classic California Zephyr photo if the weather had played nice, oh well. This locomotive was built in January 1950 (c/n 9678) on EMD Order 2012A, was destroyed in Gibson roundhouse fire, Omaha, Nebraska, February 19, 1969, retired in September 1969, and finally dismantled in December that year.

CB&Q E8 9940A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9940A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9940A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on Sunday, May 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I lived along the Burlington's triple track main line during 1962-1966 in Naperville and I photographed a few trains during that time. One of the memories I have was the shuffle of the E-units between Aurora and Chicago. On Friday evening, after their assigned runs, the commuter E's would be run back to Chicago for service/rotation, and on Sunday evening, replacements would be run back out to Aurora for Monday morning rush hour trains. The CB&Q rotated their E-units between Zephyr assignments and Dinkys (in CB&Q parlance, the commuter service trains were known as Dinkys). The Dinkys ran outbound from Chicago to Aurora in the evening, so at the end of Friday, the E's in Aurora were run back to the Zephyr Pit at 14th St. in Chicago on the next Dinky, to be serviced/inspected and placed in Zephyr service, and the locos coming off Zephyr service would be assigned to Dinkys. Number 9940A is seen here headed for Aurora on a Sunday evening with three more E's and two coaches. I imagine the engineer had an easy time with the schedule, I believe the loco's were all MU'd, so he probably had good acceleration.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9940A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This photo illustrates a transitional period in CB&Q powered suburban trains. If only two Budd bi-level coaches were on the assigned train, a tap was made to the 72 volt Auxiliary Generators on modified E-units and the power car (the car behind the locomotive) could be omitted. The lights and auxiliary controls on the Budd cars were electrically powered, the heat was from locomotive-supplied steam, and the air-conditioning was by Wakesha engines powered by propane.

CB&Q E8 9940A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9940A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9940A on Train 21, the Morning Zephyr at Waterman, Illinois, February 18, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built January 1950 (c/n 9679), became BN 9940, later 9903, then IC 102 and as of 06/11/08 became CN 102. It is pictured on the westbound Morning Zephyr which usually rated only two motors (CB&Q term for Locomotive). Also, the Zephyr has two dome observation cars in the consist, one cut in behind the motors but ahead of the baggage car. The second dome observation is running backwards coupled to the baggage car, the third car in the consist. Around this time, the CB&Q dispatched Train 21 with the observation running backwards to save switching charges at Saint Paul, but I cannot explain the first dome behind the motors except to speculate that it is a ferry move to get the dome in position for another assignment.

CB&Q E8 9941A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9941A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9941A eastbound on Train #30 at Naperville, Illinois, June 9, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Train #30 was the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska, spelled backwards) Zephyr, the daily Lincoln to Chicago overnight Zephyr which also handled mail, not to be confused with the CB&Q-C&S Train #30, the 'Nightcrawler', a daily Denver to Billings passenger train. It's possible this train also contains parts of Train #56, the American Royal Zephyr, which ran between Saint Joseph-Kansas City, Missouri and Chicago. According to the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, both trains arrived in Galesburg at slightly different times, but both departed at 4:45 AM CST, with both trains due to arrive at Chicago Union Station at 7:50 AM CST. There is a schedule in the Employees Timetable #10 for #30 between Galesburg and Chicago, but none for #56, suggesting that the trains were combined.

Note the new gallery car cut in third car back. The CB&Q was in the process of receiving new bi-level commuter coaches from Budd around this time, including six with control cabs to initiate push-pull service on the Chicago-Aurora commuter line. In order to avoid Illinois state sales tax, the new cars were routed from the builder to Lincoln, Nebraska, weighed, and returned to Chicago on the next available train.

CB&Q E8 9941B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9941B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9941B, Chicago Union Station (CUS), May 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1950 (c/n 9682) on EMD Order 2012A, it became BN 9934 sometime after March 2, 1970, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 and was renumbered to 333, was retired and scrapped in 1977.

This is as far east as you could go on the CB&Q, although technically, the CB&Q tracks ended a couple of miles behind this train at about Union Avenue, and this train is on CUS Company rails. This locomotive had just brought a Dinky into Union Station, the class lights are on and red, now what? I asked Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q (and BN) Engineer about the procedure of getting the Dinkys out of the station, and here is his relpy:

First, while still inbound and passing 14th Street, I would cut the steam off to the train so the line would be safe to disconnect by the Carmen in the yard. Once in the Depot we'd unload the passengers, wait for the back up signal and then - - back up. These moves were controlled by the back-up hose as were all such operations in those days (pre radio). The Switchtender under 12th Street would have to line us into the assigned track and indicate to the rear man that we were indeed lined in. Proceeding up the lead we would shove to the limit of the yard track and stop. The stop was courtesy of the back up hose. We, the Engineer and Fireman, were done for that leg of the trip. At some time later, the Hostler would come and gather up the engines and run 'em over to the pit for servicing and turning. Later in the day the Hostler would bring the engines back to the trains to which assigned and we'd do it all over again only this time, in the reverse order of the morning move.

This particular E8 has its original painted side panels. Records indicate that it was never retrofitted with stainless steel panels, though many of this order (2012) of E8's were. It was not until the third order of E-8's (2048) that the locomotives came from the builder with stainless steel plates as original equipment.
