CB&Q E8 9942A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9942A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1950 (c/n 9683) on EMD Order 2012A, it became BN 9942 (after 3/2/1970), became Amtrak 337 (after 8/1/1972), and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. It is seen here as the rear unit of a Friday evening eastbound push-pull Dinky. All the locomotives were MU'ed together, so that's at least 9000 horsepower pushing a single coach. After the rush hour trains arrived in Aurora, the Burlington needed to get the locomotives back to Chicago for service and rotation into Zephyr service. This is likely Train #154, daily passenger due out of Aurora at 6:15 PM and arriving at Union Station at 7:15 PM. The process would be reversed on Sunday evening with locomotives off Zephyr service run out to Aurora on a single car Dinky for Monday morning rush hour. This situation would have been a bit different only a couple of months earlier. The CB&Q had just received gallery cab cars from Budd and had only recently started push-pull service. The previous procedure was to turn all the locomotives (cabs facing east) and head them back to Chicago pulling a single coach.

CB&Q E8 9942B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9942B
Description:  CB&Q E8 9942B on Train #1, the Denver Zephyr, at Chicago Union Station, October 23, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Admittedly not a good photo, also not a Dinky, but it helps illustrate the following story from Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q locomotive engineer.

All the CB&Q E units had the 24RL brake schedule with Dual Service mode built into it. In mainline passenger service the brake valve was configured to operate in the conventional manner, meaning the normal automatic (AU) brake valve operation. In suburban service, however, the brake valve was configured to operate in the Straight Air (SA) mode. The Dual Mode Brake Valve was a great feature on suburban trains. In mainline passenger service SMOOTH was the name of the game. In suburban service QUICKNESS was the order of the day. When an initial terminal brake test was required, the Engineer placed the air brake selector clutch in the AU position and performed the test. Upon receipt of an indication from the Trainman performing the walking inspection that the brakes set and released, the Engineer placed the selector clutch in the SA position. An application of the brakes is made and the Trainman walks the train again to assure the proper operation of the SA equipment. As his walk ends at the engine, he would report to the Engineer that everything works. It must be noted that LAP position does not exist when in SA mode. Instructions admonish the Engineer to NOT move the selector clutch again for the remainder of the trip.

In the old days when a crew went on duty at 14th Street, the air tests were performed prior to backing into CUS (Chicago Union Station). Also, in the old days, a tail hose was employed by the Trainman responsible for getting the train safely into the depot and stopped, SHORT of the bumping post (end of track). The tail hose was a crude device consisting of a whistle and a valve designed to reduce trainline pressure in an unmeasured manner. As the rear car approached the bumping post, the Trainman would crack the valve to slow the movement. At the proper moment (hopefully) the valve was opened ALL the way, placing the train in emergency. The air in the trainline cannot now be restored until some kindly person closes the tail hose valve. If no one does anything, the engine will send air back through the brake pipe until it runs out of air.

That having been said, this might be a good place to insert a note concerning an idiosyncrasy of Vapor-Clarkson Steam Generators. The boilers need pressurized air to atomize the fuel in order to remain operational. There are several methods available to the Engineer of saving the air most of which require getting down off the engine. One method that does not require getting down is as simple as moving the air brake selector clutch to AU and placing the brake valve handle in LAP position. We have now stopped the flow of air as well as violated a rule.

Once under way, another rule requires that an application of the train brakes must be made to determine that they work (the running test). Since the maximum speed through the Canal St. curve is 25 mph, what better place to kill two birds with one brake application. Most trains can exceed 25 on their way past the coach yard so, as the curve draws near, the Engineer reaches for the brake valve handle and moves it to the Application Position. Application Position exists ONLY in SA mode. As the handle is moved the Engineer hears a small but DISTINCTIVE exhaust of air. This small exhaust ONLY occurs in the AU position and, with the speed well above 25 and the curve immediately in front of the engine there's a MAD SCRAMBLE by the Engineer to center the brake handle, fumble with the selector clutch to find SA, move the brake valve handle to Release Position and then apply the straight air brakes to the train.

Let's see, what was that rule governing the use of the selector clutch after an air test? Hmmm.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942A on Track #2 at Union Station, Chicago, Illinois on February 6, 1967, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The class lights are lit and red, indicating this is the end of the train, which arrived earlier as Train #132. This is not a push-pull train, the Engineer is preparing to back the train to the coach yard and is observing Rule 19.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E-8 #9943A westbound at Naperville, Illinois, May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I lived along the Burlington's triple track main line during 1962-1966 in Naperville and I photographed a few trains during that time. One of the memories I have was the shuffle of the E-units between Aurora and Chicago. On Friday evening, after their assigned runs, the commuter E's would be run back to Chicago for service/rotation, and on Sunday evening, replacements would be run back out to Aurora for Monday morning rush hour trains. The CB&Q rotated their E-units between Zephyr assignments and commuter service. The commuter service (in CB&Q parlance, the commuter service trains were known as Dinkys) was westbound from Chicago to Aurora in the evening, so at the end of Friday, the E's in Aurora were run back to the Zephyr Pit at 14th St. in Chicago on the next eastbound Dinky, to be serviced/inspected and placed in Zephyr service, and the locos coming off Zephyr service would be assigned to Dinkys. One of the chores of the rotation would be the replacement of brake shoes, and this photo illustrates the E's showing off their new shoes as they were run back west to Aurora for the Monday morning rush hour. The train behind this one would have about 5 E's and one coach. All (except the coach) would have blazing brake shoes as the approached the stop at the Naperville station (behind me in this photo). This usually happened late in the evening. I have a photo of this event, but it is just brake shoe glow. I imagine the engineer had an easy time with the schedule, I believe the loco's were all MU'd, so he probably had good acceleration.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9943B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B westbound on Train #17, The California Zephyr, Naperville, Illinois, June 24, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Business is a little better than usual, there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome coach. This locomotive was built in April 1950 (c/n 9686) on EMD Order 2012A, became BN 9936, and was sold for scrap to Precision National in June 1981. It is seen here 27 miles from Union Station in Chicago, half way between Lisle and Naperville, about a half hour into its overnight journey to Denver, where the CB&Q power will be replaced with D&RGW power. The CZ will continue through the Rocky Mountains arriving at Salt Lake City, Utah, where the D&RGW power will be replaced by WP power for the final leg of the journey to Oakland, California, 2525 miles from its starting point. Two days from this photo date, this same locomotive will return to Chicago leading Train #10, The Denver Zephyr.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9943B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B & O1a 4960 at Aurora, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Koadchrome by Chuck Zeiler. It's a busy moment at the Aurora, Illinois Depot as a freight passes though and Train #10, The Denver Zephyr arrives for its 8:45 AM CST stop. This being summer, it's 9:45 DST locally, and Extra 4960 West waits for the trains to clear the circuit before proceeding on a fantrip to Oregon, Illinois and return. By almost anyone's standards this was an unusual fantrip, the feature of this trip was that it was a working way freight. In addition to the usual baggage car (for tape recording and hanging your head out), open gondola, air-conditioned coaches and snack car, the trip had freight cars to be set out at various industries along the way.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943A westbound at Berwyn, Illinois on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during March 1950 (c/n 9685), became Burlington Northern 9943 after the BN merger March 2, 1970, became Amtrak 338 on August 1, 1972, retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap during July 1975 to H. Koppell Co. of Boise Idaho. It's Sunday, the clue being three locomotives and two coaches on Train 225. The CB&Q practice was to rotate the passenger E's between suburban assignments and Zephyr assignments. As a result, locomotives would lay over in Chicago at the Zephyr Pit (14th St. service facility), and on Sunday evening, the E's coming off the Zephyrs would be run out to Aurora on Sunday evening on the Dinkys (commuter trains) in preparation for the Monday morning rush hour, thus the expanation for the multiple E-units on this Dinky. On the adjacent track is Train #1, the westbound Denver Zephyr.

The Fireman was preparing to pick up train orders. The blunt end observation car was coupled to the baggage car. This was the practice in later years to save switching charges at Saint Paul. The power and baggage car would uncouple from the train upon arrival at Saint Paul, leaving the train at the station. The power would be turned and serviced, return to the station, couple to the train, and depart as Train Number 24, the Afternoon Zephyr.

CB&Q E8 9945A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9945A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on January 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9689) on EMD Order 2012A, became BN 9945, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 339, finally retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Precision National. It is seen making a station stop to discharge passengers and conduct a bit of head end business. The power car behind the locomotive has a baggage section, and a CB&Q employee is handing out something to the man on the ground with the baggage cart. The gentleman on the left side platform has paused in his shoveling duties to watch me snap this photo.

This is most likely Train Number 103, a daily except Saturday and Sunday almost all-stop Dinky departing Union Station at 7:35 AM, arriving at Naperville at 8:35 AM. A note in CB&Q Employees Timetable #9 (in effect on this date) states: NO. 103 MUST NOT EXCEED 35 M.P.H. TO DISPATCH NEWSPAPERS AT EOLA. This train is not scheduled to make a stop at Eola (five miles west of Naperville), and I can tell you from first hand experience (I was a newspaper boy in Naperville) that dispatching newspapers at 35 mph was not good for the papers. You generally would throw away the first couple of papers on the outside of the bundle. This train is on the middle track because the eastbound East End Way Freight was occupying the far left (typically westbound) track on its journey from Eola to Naperville this Monday morning.

The building on the left was the Naperville News Agency, my source of employment as a newspaper boy in my early teen years. You may notice steam at the front of the locomotive. One of the principles of steam heat was that the steam eventually condensed back into water. Generally, the steam valves at either end of the train were cracked open slightly to let that water escape.

CB&Q E8 9947A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9947A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9947A and UP E9 951 at Union Station, Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9947A was built as CB&Q E8 9947A in August 1950 (c/n 11701) on EMD Order 2023A. It became BN 9947 on March 2, 1970 and on August 1, 1972 it became Amtrak 341. It is seen here in charge of Train #25, the North Coast Limited. departing Union Station at 12:20 PM. The times quoted here are Central Standard time, as published in timetables. It's about 1:20 locally. The train will be turned over to the Northern Pacific at 7:05 PM at Saint Paul, MN, 427 miles from this point. Union Pacific 951 was built in June 1955 (c/n 20488) on EMD Order 2070A, and went on to become on of the UP's Heritage Fleet of preserved diesels. It is seen here at the south throat of Union Station, somewhat out of place. The Union Pacific's trains in and out of Chicago were handled by the Milwaukee Road, the only tenant on the north side of Union Station. A possible explanation for this rare appearance of a UP train on the south side might be a derailment blocking the Milwaukee's main line, forcing the MILW to use CB&Q tracks around the problem.
