Title:  MILW F40C 49
Description:  MILW F40C 49 westbound at about Paulina Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge was the Chicago Transit Authority (built in 1895 by the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad Company) Northwest branch, removed and all but abandon after the Congress (Eisenhower) Expressway was completed around 1958. This bridge remained because the Milwaukee Road and the C&NW had installed signals on the structure.

MILW E80
Title:  MILW E80
Description:  Milwaukee Road E80 at Butte, Montana on October 10, 1958, Kodachrome by an unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is the Front of the locomotive. The following is from the publication, Interurban Electric Locomotives From General Electric, by Joaseph A. Strapac:

The Milwaukee bought two 70-ton, 3,000 volt steeplecabs from GE for April 1917 delivery; numbers 10050-51 (c/n 5478-5479) truly stretching the definition for interurban-style locomotives. These (and two more on another order) were the only examples of domestic common carrier units operating under 3,000 volts overhead. Built to switch mainline yards, they would be renumbered to E80 and E81 in 1939 and would survive until the end of electrification in 1974.

MILW F7 83A
Title:  MILW F7 83A
Description:  MILW F7 83A, Bensenville, Illinois, April 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Due to the Milwaukee's renumbering and conflicting source information, the following is my best guess: This locomotive was built as number 110C in December 1950 (c/n 11803) on EMD Order 3036A. At some point it was renumbered to 83A and retired in May 1980.

It is seen here stored with SE3 and 83C. The SE3 was built in November 1951 as F7B 118B (c/n 15226). The prime mover and fuel tank have been removed and it is a booster unit slaved electrically to the cab units. The 83C was built as 72C in July 1950 (c/n 10318), renumbered to 83C and retired in May 1980. It appears that both cab units ended up at the Indiana Transportaion Museum painted as Monon units. Barely visible over the cab of the 83C and to the left of SD45 #15's rear radiator fan is a plane landing at O'Hare Airport.

Title:  MILW F7 83C
Description:  Milwaukee Road F7 83C at Bensenville, Illinois on an unknown day in February 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This A-B-A ( 83C-SE3-83A ) set had been reduced to transfer service and was retired by this photo date. Number 83C was built in July 1950 ( c/n 10318 ) as 72C, renumbered to 83C, retired and sold to the Indiana Transportation Museum in May 1983. Number SE3 was built in November 1951 ( c/n 15226 ) as 118B, rebuilt at West Milwaukee Shops as Slug SE2 in April 1974, renumbered to SE3 a month later. Number 83A was built in January 1951 ( c/n 11803 ) as 110C, renumbered to 83A, sold to the Indiana Transportation Museum in May 1983.

MILW F7 85A
Title:  MILW F7 85A
Description:  MILW F7 85A at Bensenville, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1976, Ektachrome by Edward M. DeRouin, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 85A was built in December 1950 as MILW F7 49A (c/n 10349), renumbered to second 85A sometime after first 85A (built as F3A 82D) was traded to GE in 1965. This unit was sold to the Long Island Railroad in 1978, rebuilt to LI 620 as a power car and outshopped during October 1979.

MILW F3 86A
Title:  MILW F3 86A
Description:  Milwaukee Road F3 86A and CFA16-4 27C at Bensenville, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 86A was built as F3A 83D in February 1949 (c/n 6314) on EMD Order 997A, classed as 15-EF on the Milwaukee. As delivered, it was the rear cab unit of locomotive set 83A-B-C-D. During late 1949, this four-unit locomotive was separated into two two-unit locomotives for assignment to lighter trains that did not need four units and where overall speed between terminals was not important. Numbers 83D-C were renumbered to 86A-B, and both retired and traded to EMD or GE on new power a month after this photo. Number 27C was built in August 1951 (c/n 16L488), class 16-FF. I cannot find a retirement date (yet).

MILW F9 93C
Title:  MILW F9 93C
Description:  Milwaukee Road F9 93C at Elgin, Illinois on March 7, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 93C was built in January 1954 (c/n 18754) as number 83C (second), renumbered to 126A (first), then 93C (second). Originally built as a freight locomotive, it was regeared in the late 1950's - early 1960's for passenger service and a Cummins diesel/generator set was installed for HEP for the Budd gallery cars in commuter service. Number 93C was sold to Chrome Crankshaft in October 1980 and scrapped..

MILW F9's 93C and 94A
Title:  MILW F9's 93C and 94A
Description:  Milwaukee Rad F9's 93C and 94A at Elgin, Illinois on May 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Both locomotives are F9's, built for freight service on EMD Order 3172, the 93C was built in January 1954 as 83C (c/n 18754), later renumbered 93C, and later still renumbered to 126A, and it appears to have been retired in February 1975. Number 94A was also built in January 1954 (c/n 18755) as 84C, later renumbered 94A, later still renumbered 127A, and appears to have been retired in January 1978. In the early 1960's both units were equipped with Cummins HEP generators for suburban service. Interesting observation; I believe it is illegal to paint couplers nowdays, because it hides the cracks that might indicate failure. But it appears that the Milwaukee cared about the appearance of its locomotives, if only for a brief period of time.

MILW FP7 97A
Title:  MILW FP7 97A
Description:  MILW FP7 97A at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on June 29, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1951 (c/n 10363) on EMD Order 3073A, it was retired in May 1980. It is seen here at the head of Train #101, the UP's "City of San Francisco", departing Union Station at 6:00 PM CST, or 7:00 PM locally. A year previously, this scene would have been covered with a train shed, completed in 1925. The shed had been removed in preparation for the construction of a high rise office building to be built on the air rights over the tracks.

MILW FP7 105A
Title:  MILW FP7 105A
Description:  Milwaukee Road FP7 105A westbound at Galewood, Illinois on August 24, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1952 (c/n 16946) on EMD Order 3130A, it was retired in May 1980 and scrapped by Precision National. I selected the location as Galewood because the software does not recognize the name Mars, which is the stop this train is approaching. Mars was named for the nearby industry Mars Candy Company, which also lent its name to the Mars light, a gyrating warning light seen in the upper headlight of this locomotive. Around 1936, prototypes were produced in the Mars Candy Company's machine shop by Jerry Kennelly, who applied for a patent for his figure 8 moving beam warning light, and assigned the design to Mars Light Company.

MILW X106
Title:  MILW X106
Description:  MILW X106 at Bensenville, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This was once one of the Milwaukee Road's homemade branch line combines, reduced to MOW service. Spray painted on the side is: X106 DISPO HOLD. It would appear that this car was originally in the 2708-2717 number series. The following is from the March 1998 issue of Mainline Modeler (page 70): The Milwaukee Road provided extensive passenger service to the farming communities of the "granger states" in 1934. To reduce costs, the road constructed all-steel lightweight combines for mixed train service. These distinctive arch-window cars were built at the same time as the new lightweight passenger cars, which would later become the 1935 Hiawatha. After experimental cars 4000 and 4400 were constructed in early 1934, combines 2700 and 2701 were built using the same lightweight all-steel modular construction techniques. Late in 1934, six more were constructed, 2702-2707. These first eight cars were smooth-sided and contained a 23' 9-1/2" passenger compartment and a 25' 7" express compartment. The first two cars rode on Bettendorf caboose trucks, and the last six rode on the new all-welded outside-equalized caboose trucks. The spartan interiors were lighted with kerosene lamps and heated with a coal stove in the passenger and express ends. The cars were not air-conditioned and had movable windows. Later, in 1938, ten cars (2708-2717) were constructed following the latest structural side design, which included seven longitudinal ribs and rectangular windows. These cars were slightly longer with 16-1/4" being added to the express compartment between the express door and the end of the body. Another ten rib side cars (2750-3759) were constructed in June-July 1938 and were extended another 15' in length to contain a mail compartment. These cars rode on slightly heavier all-welded inside-equalized trucks. All 24 combines lasted into the 1960's in revenue service, with the majority then in SOO ownership as MOW cars.
