Album Info:The University of North Carolina is the oldest public university in the U.S. It admitted students in 1795 but was not served by a railroad until 1/1/1882 when the State University Railroad was opened between University Station and Chapel Hill. Because the academic community did not want to be disturbed the railroad terminated about a mile from the campus in what is now Carrboro. The 10.2 mile line became part of the Southern and now Norfolk Southern. Its north end is an interchange with the North Carolina Railroad (NS provides freight service on the state owned RR) at University Station known by the railroad as Glenn. The line is still used by NS to carry coal to UNC and limestone to the power plant's scrubbers and sometimes a load of lumber. The station in Carrboro still stands as a restaurant but the substantial wood combination station at University Station is long gone.
