Title:  NS 9335
Description:  NS 2652 and 9335 bring ore loads east! Until the mid-90s, and typical during PRR/PC/early CR days, iron ore still ran west frequently when the mills were still thriving. As many as five or six loaded trains a day headed inland from the ports of Philadelphia, Fairless or Baltimore when ships arrived; with 150-220 car empties returning to be loaded - often jenny hoppers with their machine gun-like cadence over the rail joints. Nowadays, like the economy in general, everything seems backwards. Old "naught" track doesnt seem long for existence given the accumulating rust.

A day at the beach
Title:  A day at the beach
Description:  BNSF 5745 runs east amidst the sand and tall grass, although the only waves are in the contour of the undulating hills. Once Burlington Roads "long branch" from Lincoln to its junction with the old NP near Billings, MT, this rural line was transformed with the advent of low sulphur coal business in the seventies and, over the interceding decades has become mostly a double-track route. This scene is at a control poiint between Bingham and Ashby, NE in this vast ranching country.

Title:  Cattails and containers
Description:  This scene reminds me of Bealville, CA by the manner in which the railroad comes down off Telocaset hill in the background (the grade is just above the level of the containers and pole lines). Albeit not as steep an incline or as compressed geographically, this segment of railroad is quite an arduous route itself. UP 4584 brings an intermodal into the mountain valley at Union Jct., OR and past a classic CTC installation.

After leaving the valley of the Snake River at Rock Island, OR, UPs La Grande Subdivision cuts northwestward with some steep grades over the Blue Mountains to reach the Columbia River valley. Here UP 5604 (with UP 5612 on the rear) ascends the first major climb on its path across the mountains at Oxman.

Description:  I was goofing off, sipping coffee and enjoying the exhilarating Montana air while packing the bike in the morning when this outfit came rambling through the pines west of Essex. There was an MW gang waiting to get on after Amtrak so I hurriedly packed and headed east on US 2, hoping the train would stop for helpers at Essex. It did, thus allowing me to follow the train up Marias Pass. Here BNSF 756, decidedly outside of traditional warbonnet territory, is resplendent amongst the tall pines.
