MP Cotter Roundhouse Foundation
Title:  MP Cotter Roundhouse Foundation
Description:  Missouri Pacific roundhouse foundation at Cotter, Arkansas, sometime in June 1992, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This may be railroad archeology, but at the time I was employed by a local real estate company to photograph property in their area. They hired a plane and I shot out the window some aerial photographs of property they listed. It was only about 10 minutes flight time to 'divert' to Cotter, so I railfanned from the air. One shot I got was the skeleton of the roundhouse at Cotter. I went on Google Earth today (the upload date), and it appears this is now the site of a factory.

One of the reasons for the Cotter roundhouse was the lay of the land. From Batesville to Cotter, the route was built along the banks of the White River, and followed the slightly uphill course to the foothills of the Ozark Mountains at Cotter. So more power was needed to get the trains out of Cotter and up into the Ozark Mountains (really, just steep hills). The MP favored Consolidation locomotives (2-8-0), so for a period of time, westbound trains arriving in Cotter had their locomotives replaced with double-headed 2-8-0s. According to Walter (Mike) Adams book, 'The White River Railway', the assets of the White River Railway were conveyed to the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern, and later, the Missouri Pacific. The roundhouse was first planned under the White River Railway, constructed under the StLIM&S, and completed under MP ownership. Here are a few quotes from the book: 'The company did announce that the roundhouse at Crane would be identical to the one at Cotter and would be built from the same blueprints and by the same B&B forces, just as soon as they finished the work at Cotter. Like everything else on the division, the work on the roundhouse at Cotter suffered from the attentions of the old river. In early March, 1906 a rise threatened to inundate the new structure and less than a month later high winds blew down a portion of the roundhouse walls. Notwithstanding this, the work went on and in late April, 1906 certain B&B crews started moving out of Cotter for Crane. On July 4, 1906, the new turntable was placed in service at Cotter. This eliminated the temporary table installed when it became necessary to remove the wye track to make room for the roundhouse. The old table was far from satisfactory and the crews heartily welcomed the new one. The new table was a standard Philadelphia Bridge Works steel deck girder, 74 feet and 6 inches long. The table was hand operated and the pit was enclosed with a concrete wall and the floor was paved with brick. The concrete pedestal was poured on a footing of deeply driven pilings. An identical table was installed at Crane. The roundhouse was still not complete, being held up waiting for some vital machinery and tools, but when the turntable was completed, engines could be run in out of the weather and some servicing carried out. When a big engine showed up, say a Spot or 1 Class locomotive, everyone within shouting distance was rounded up to man the 'push sticks'. When the 1200's (2-8-2's) arrived on the north end of the division in 1927, after fighting their weight for two years, management finally approved an AFE (Authority For Expenditures) in October 1929 to install an air-operated tractor. Since the cost of this installation was only $1135.98, one wonders why it took so long to get the AFE approved. It sure cut down on the incidence of hernias among the work force at the Cotter roundhouse. In October 1950 the Division was dieselized, Engine #14 (2-8-0) left Cotter under steam on Train #269 headed for Newport and the Arkansas Division, and an era ended. The Cotter roundhouse was closed, no more would the flooding of the White River coat the floor with a foot of mud, no more would the 'big whistle' signal a train 'in the ditch'. The roundhouse, coal chutes, and water tanks were on a standby basis. Before the end of the year (1950), all machinery was dismantled and moved to Sedalia.

MP Cotter Bridge
Title:  MP Cotter Bridge
Description:  Missouri Pacific bridge over the White River at Cotter, Arkansas on an unknown day in October 1995, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The train is (was) the White River Railway tourist operation, no longer in business, but on this date it was on a 1% upward grade about to enter a tunnel. Power for the day was leased MNA GP35m 4211. The train is pictured on the 1904-built bridge which included a turn span. The river was navigable at the time the bridge was built, however it was never turned except for the acceptance test. By the date of this photo welded rail had been layed over the entire bridge. The train is on a 1% grade up out of Cotter and once over the bridge, the train will enter a 1034 foot long tunnel. The arched bridge in the foreground is the Marsh Rainbow Bridge (James Marsh designed and patented it in 1912, it was completed in 1930), which carried US 62 over the river. As of this photo date US 62 bypasses this bridge, and the arched bridge was renamed R.M. Ruthven Bridge (the county judge who obtained the bridge) and today hosts Business US 62.

MP GP7 134
Title:  MP GP7 134
Description:  MP GP7 134 at McCook, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 134 was built as StLB&M GP7 4119 in July 1950 (c/n 11552), renumbered to MP 134 an an unknown date, retired in August 1979 and is seen here at Pielet Brothers. Note the extra front numberboard, for which I have no explanation. Update, please see Comment below, thanks to Joseph Yarbrough.

On the MoPac, a select few GP7's had a 'crew cab'. These units were originally on the Texas & Pacific and Gulf Coast Lines. Outwardly they looked like any regular Geep with the exception that the crew-cabs were modified with an extra set of number board cut-outs/windows that were exactly the same size as the number boards located just below the usual number boards on the short hood/nose. Behind the windows inside the cab sat a spare seat... right beside the typical toilet. The 'crew-cab' GP7s used by I-GN and STLB&M (series 4116-4123) were equipped with crew-cabs (modified circa 1953): 4117, 4119, 4120, 4122, and 4123. Since no other unit's received the crew cab, it's speculated that this modification may have been a 'Texas thing' for the brakeman to ride inside the unit.

MP GP40 633
Title:  MP GP40 633
Description:  MP GP40 633 at Cotter, Arkansas on May 6, 1989, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive has an interesting history. The MP never owned GP40, and neither did the Rock Island, but this is a picture of a former Rock GP40 in MP-UP paint. Missouri Pacific 633 was built as CRI&P GP40 4702 in March 1970 (c/n 36388). As part of a planned 1966 merger, the UP purchased GP40's in a couple of groups and leased them to the Rock. When the Rock shut down in 1980, the leased locomotives were returned to the UP. Rock Island 4702 was repainted to UP 633 in June 1983. After the UP acquired the MP in 1984, and the MP came up short of power, the GP40's were shopped and some were re-painted and lettered in the North Little Rock style for the MP. This unit was numbered MP 633 June 14, 1985, leased to NdeM from October 1989 to January 1991, retired October 23, 1991; stored unserviceable at Fort Worth, Texas; sold to Phoenix Railway Corporation, Spokane, Washington, in February 1992; sale rescinded; sold to Helm Financial, April 3, 1992. There is probably more to this story, so please leave a comment if you have more info.

MP GP40 645
Title:  MP GP40 645
Description:  Missouri Pacific Railroad GP40 645 at Cotter, Arkansas on August 25, 1988, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 645 was built in April 1970 as CRI&P GP40 4714 ( c/n 36400 ), owned by the UP and leased to the Rock Island. When the RI folded, the leased GP40's ( 51 of the original 60 ) were returned to the UP and put into storage, but not before receiving UP paint and numbers. By 1984 traffic demands on the MP activated some of the stored units, and some were repainted for the MP, this unit on February 20, 1985. From October 1989 to January 1990 it was leased to NdeM, returned to the UP after being wrecked, relettered from MP 645 to UP 645 and stored unservicable. It was retired October 23, 1991, sold to National Railway Equipment, re-sold to the M&NA, becoming MNA 645.

MP F3 772
Title:  MP F3 772
Description:  MP F3 772 at Omaha Nebraska on February 3, 1963, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Sometimes referred to as a F5, this unit was built during September 1948 as MP F3 568 (c/n 5436) was renumbered to 772, retired in 1968 and traded to GE. The F5 designation was the result of this order of locomotives being built as F3's but equipped with improved (D27) traction motors that were used in the F7 production, as well as heavier cables and higher capacity traction motor blowers. It was equipped with a steam generator.

MP RS3m 1077
Title:  MP RS3m 1077
Description:  Missouri Pacific Railroad RS3m 1077 at Saint Louis, Missouri on October 2, 1965, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1077 was built in February 1955 as MP RS3 4509 (c/n 80766), renumbered to 982 around 1961, rebuilt to what MP referred to as "EMCO" or more commonly, GP12.

The rebuilding process utilized a used EMD 12-567A normally aspired prime mover from a retired E-unit, replacing the unreliable Alco 12 cylinder Model 244G turbocharged prime mover. The North Little Rock Shops also installed a custom three-stack exhaust mainfold and replaced Alco's mechanically-driven radiator fan with EMD electrically-driven fans. Almost 600 horsepower was lost in the conversion, however this was not a concern to MP, since the RS3m/GP12 locomotives were to be assigned as yard power. This unit was retired in December 1974 and traded to GE.

MP GP15-1 1651
Title:  MP GP15-1 1651
Description:  MP GP15-1 1651 at Cotter, Arkansas on February 23, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It would appear that the North Little Rock UP yellow paint did not hold up too well on what appears to be a neglected locomotive. This unit was built in August 1981 (c/n 807019-7), delivered in Jenks Blue, received its UP paint (with MP lettering) on July 27, 1985, got new UP paint and lettering on October 25, 1991, and became UPY 651 on September 1, 2000.

MP GP15-1 1656
Title:  MP GP15-1 1656
Description:  MP GP15-1's 1568 and 1656 at Cotter, Arkansas on February 25, 1991, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1568 show the typical paint scheme of the as-delivered GP15-1's. Number 1656 shows the application of the small road numbers at the top of the hood. This was typical for the first generation of hood units on the MP, but unusual for a GP15.

MP GP15-1 1656
Title:  MP GP15-1 1656
Description:  MP GP15-1 1656 at Cotter, Arkansas on June 16, 1991, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There has to be a story behind this locomotive's paint scheme. Although reminiscent of a previous MP paint scheme, the GP15 series had a large road number applied to the center of the hood, certainly not a spray can number.
