Title:  New signal
Description:  KCS has been gradually relocating signals along the line. They moved the next one south, 252-1/2 about 1/4 to the south of its previous location; that one was in place maybe four years, and was a new installation replacing another signal nearby. Several years back, they moved siglan 226-7 in Siloam, about 1/4 mile to the north. This one was originally about 1/2 mile to the north.All of the new signals are now near road crossings. Makes sense if you ask me. The TXUX train passes new signal 250-0.

Description:  The short grade at the other end of town gives me time to get to the US 59 overpass at the south end. Its a good tele shot, and I usually have time to set up for it. The head end passes the passenger station, now a museum.

Description:  Its a Tuesday afternoon, and there is absolutely nothing going on here. Were in the second month of the Coronavirus pandemic, and all the schools are closed, kids learning on line from home. Some parts of the world, however, need to keep moving, such as this southbound TXUX coal train, headed for a Texas power plant to keep the lights on-and the hospitals and factories that make masks, ventilators, and toilet paper powered up.

Coal train DPU
Title:  Coal train DPU
Description:  I dont always pay attention to the DPUs, as the head end is usually a more interesting shot. Also, if Ive let the train get all the way past me, it can be hard to catch back up. I do like to get a shot, though. Since the chase ends here-the line between here and Sallisaw is impossible to follow-I let the train go by and shot the rear end. Nothing special today, not even the usual set up, which is typically a home road unit, with a pair of KCS six axles added at Pittsburg. Three BNSFs today.

Description:  I heard this train from the house, and beat it down to Westville to get a shot. Normally, at this time of day-6 PM-the sun would be low and golden. This summers western wildfires-there are currently over five million acres burning across the west, mostly in California, Oregon, and Washington-have sent up a pall of smoke that has now reached across the country, dimming the sun, and making for drab photos. Southbound TXUX train passes the edge of the athletic complex.

Description:  After I shot the head end back in town, I ran to the Baron Fork Creek bridge on US 59, planning to get the DPU as it crossed the creek. That part went OK, but the clouds got me. We see a three unit set of BNSF units, including a Grinstein, crossing the bridge in subdued light.

Description:  I had the shot of the southbound lined up to get him as soon as he passed through the home signals at the north end of Stilwell siding. While low light this time of year makes for a really attractive photo, it also puts some trackside items in places where they throw a shadow on the train. This one got me, a phone pole too close to the tracks, and it put a shadow on the nose. Try again next time.

Description:  We were out and about Thursday, not particularly looking for trains, but saw a TXUX train across the field as we were heading north out of Westville on US 59. Catching the head end was not feasible, but I was able to get the DPU as it passed this field of hay bales, and a couple of cows, heading south in the late afternoon sun.

Catching up

Description:  Wed been out running a couple of errands this Friday afternoon, when we encountered a southbound TXUX train rolling through Siloam. We decided to beat it down to Westville to see if we could catch the train. We got to Westville to find the signal at the US 62 crossing dark. We knew wed been running fairly fast on Ark 59 coming down, so likely beat the train. We started working north against it, finally seeing it about a mile north of Westville, with the typical BNSF leaders, which are passing a pair of hay bales as they work toward Texas.

Description:  The M train has picked up 24 cars along with the dodger power, and pulls around the curve toward MP 237 to clear the interlocking at South Watts to get back to his train. The late afternoon sun glints off the four axle power KCS uses on locals. Theyve acquired quite a few GEs as road power in the last 20 years. As I look at the GPs used for locals, I have to wonder what a KCS four motor GE might look like, a B 23-7, say.

Description:  We had gone out for a drive to see the snow here in Arkansas and Oklahoma-funny, because Id never have done that in New York, but here its something of a novelty-and were coming north on US 59 from Westville, when I saw a headlight coming toward me just south of Watts. I was able to set up at the curve just south of Chewie Rd-not the new sign, right at the best point in the curve-and get a couple of shots of this southbound grain train.

Title:  Close but no cigar
Description:  TRP magazine runs a sporadic feature called "Close But No Cigar," which is a photo or two of a train where some element was flubbed in some way. This one is a nice shot of a southbound grain train, but with a cell tower right behind the train, detracting from what would otherwise be a good shot of a train with a crossbuck in late day sun at a rural crossing. We rely on our phones so seriously these days, but sometimes the required infrastructure can be intruding. So it goes.

Title:  Gloomy day action
Description:  It had rained for over a week here, and the clouds were not inclined to break up. After about 8" of rain had fallen, we went out to see how things were doing regarding flooding, which was causing problems in places. We wound up in Watts, just as the southbound Q train was arriving. He stopped at the yard office, the power right behind on the main. Looks like a visitor from afar today, too.
