RS 3
Title:  RS 3
Description:  The Adirondack RR restored service on the former NYC Adirondack Division for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, games that were notable for the US hockey teams upset win over the Soviets. By 1981, the line had become largely defunct as a going concern, and the equipment was all laid up at Thendara. Here we see the RS 3s that powered the Utica to Lake Placid trains the year before. Thirty years later, the Adirondack Scenic is making a come back on the line, resotring track that had largely gone back to nature, and developing a growing rider base.

New power
Title:  New power
Description:  M&E was acquiring Alcos wherever they could get them in the early 80s, and had picked up a pair of C 424s from the TP&W, which had gone all EMD. This one was fixed up and renumbered, the other went for parts. I got there just a little too late for full sun on the unit, so this is one of those "close but no cigar" shots, but I'll take it. I never saw TP&W's Alcos in action

Rare find
Title:  Rare find
Description:  This unit was in an industry yard in Huntington. I found it while poking around near the C&O yard looking for access points. My spotting on diesels of this vintage is a little sketchy, but Im thinking its a Whitcomb of some sort. If you know, speak up!! Post script: thanks to Rick Morgan for solving this mystery.

Title:  Long shot
Description:  The FEC from the 1960s til very recently was pretty seriously anti railfan. Geting photos on their property with permission was nigh well impossible; getting it without risked arrest. So I was only able to get this view from a public street at some distance of a pair of GP 38s. So it goes...

Lumber arriving
Title:  Lumber arriving
Description:  For a short while, there was an operation called Quaboag Transfer that used trackage rights on the Central Vermont to run a pair of piggyback trains from St Albans VT to Palmer Mass, mostly carrying flatbed trailers loaded with lumber. Initially they used a couple of ex CV RS 11s, but reliability issues caused them to go with a couple of ex Conrail GP 38s. One of the ex CR units is arriving at Palmer with the southbound train very early in the morning.
