"The Brooklyn" cuts through Saugus
Title:  "The Brooklyn" cuts through Saugus
Description:  A slightly later than normal Brooklyn (ZBRLC 24) was kind enough to come through town at almost exactly in the middle of my morning coffee break. Only problem was how faded that front GEVO was. The train is withni the last thirty or so miles of about a 970 mile trip.

Title:  OWPDO 29 "Oil Cans"
Description:  The Oil Cans has just re-crewed and is now finally working its way through the maze of tracks and traffic of Metrolinks River Sub near downtown LA. The area to the right of the tracks is nothing but autobody shops. One of them keeps spare parts in the backyard.

Day Bud on P&G Spur
Title:  Day Bud on P&G Spur
Description:  A rather rare move, the Day Bud LOF42 has come all the way up to Oxnard with some hot wood pulp cars for Proctor & Gamble. The train surprised me, peaking out behind the building like that. I heard Jaws theme song and snapped the shutter.

Malabar Switcher at the 49th St Wigwag
Title:  Malabar Switcher at the 49th St Wigwag
Description:  The 49th Street Wigwag is probably the wigwag protecting the most track today (nine tracks) of Malabar Yard. The local works the yard and the area to the north and east. At one time, stacks and manifests came through here on the way to the Harbor, but today, the furtherst anything goes is about another 100 yards south. The train is about to stop to let the brakie off, before proceeding across the crossing.

Pomona Montclair Road Switcher
Title:  Pomona Montclair Road Switcher
Description:  The LOB32 07, Pomona Montclair Road Switcher passes one of the cranes that is re-railing Watco's SW1500 and GP35 following a mishap the night before. The LOB32 is doing the switching that the Watco SW1500 was supposed to do before it ran into the GP35 and put them both on the ground (the GP35 sadly on its side).

Malabar Switcher Y-LAC0112
Title:  Malabar Switcher Y-LAC0112
Description:  A pair of derated GP50s (with the embarassing moniker of GP25) begin their day at Malabar. One of them was spewing some kind of white smoke, indicating that something else was burning besides diesel fuel. This job work Malabar Yard on the north end of the former ATSF Redondo Branch, later the 4th District, and then the Harbor Sub. Today, the middle of this line is a rusted parallelgram, but Malabar still sees work every weekday morning.

Old Faithful or the Malabar Switcher?
Title:  Old Faithful or the Malabar Switcher?
Description:  There was some weird plume of white smoke (maybe unburned fuel) errupting out of one the Malabar Switchers GP25s this day. Very sad that nothing goes any further south than those engines are in this shot.

Detouring and deadheading at CP Saugus
Title:  Detouring and deadheading at CP Saugus
Description:  March 2011 saw a lot of detours and some late trains for Amtrak's Coast Starlight, but much of that was planned for. This particular move had to be made in order to keep the trains running. When the previous day's Starlight was trapped in Oakland due to slides on the Coast, the equipment was deadheaded under the symbol AMT 11X to get the trainset back to LAX. The train came down through the SJQ Valley and then the Saugus Line. It's seen here passing CP Saugus.

ATSF 3751 heads to National Train Day display
Title:  ATSF 3751 heads to National Train Day display
Description:  The big Northern barely got to move her wheels on this day, as her entire run was from Redondo Junction to LAUS, maybe a total of four miles. Still, she put on quite a smoke display. Thanks to the crew for giving the few of us out there a great show.

Y-LAC0204 Yard Hopper
Title:  Y-LAC0204 Yard Hopper
Description:  BNSF's afternoon yard hopper job that runs from Malabar to Los Angeles Junction's A Yard to Commerce Yard skipped the last stop on this day as it picked up 49 loads from the Los Angeles Junction (mostlly hidden by those white buildings on the left there). The train is seen here pulling out of the LAJ and heading home to Malabar on a brief bit of Union Pacific trackage rights as it pulls across the LA River on LASL track next to Downy Road. The extra third diesel is likely a unit being leased to LAJ rotating out for maintainence.

An Aurant Switch
Title:  An Aurant Switch
Description:  YLZ71R 20, an LATC Aurant Switch heads light back to Shops Yard in the setting sun. The crew has just put in a huge amount of work on the corn syrup cars in Aurant Yard. This spot was a grade crossing until recently, and one of the few easy places to get a summer shot on this line. Now it's fenced in and not so easy.

IBRLCX 02
Title:  IBRLCX 02
Description:  A rare extra makes its way down the Saugus Line, passing through the Golden Valley part of Santa Clarita. IBRLCX 02 has quite an insteresting lashup, a very luck GEVO up front, one of the late model SD70Ms with a nose a little like an SD70ACe in the middle and, yes, in 2011, an SD40-2. Had a storeowner come out to ask me what I was doing when I took this shot. Told him all about being a railfan.
