CA&E 137
Title:  CA&E 137
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railway coach 137 at Wheaton, Illinois, unknown date and photographer, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. The date is a best guess, based on the purchase of these cars from the CNS&M in 1946. This car was built by the Jewett Car Company in 1907 as Chicago & Milwaukee Electric Railway (later CNS&M) 137, equipped with four GE73C traction motors in Baldwin 295 trucks, seating for 54 passengers. It was leased (along with #'s 129, 130, 133, and 134) from the CNS&M in 1936 to permit the CA&E to shop its own cars for heavy repairs. The CA&E re-worked the controls, changed the coupler height, installed electric heaters and made them suitable to run in multiple with other CA&E cars. The leased cars were returned to the CNS&M after WWII, and still in CA&E paint, were used for extra moves. They were purchased in 1946 to help with increased traffic on the CA&E, and saw their last service around 1953. Because of a difference in gearing, they were segregated into trains of like construction.

CA&E 320
Title:  CA&E 320
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin 320 on CB&Q flat car 94027 at Eola, Illinois on May 12, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, The Story Of The Chicago Aurora & Elgin RR 2-History, by Larry Planchno:

A special note must be made of car 320 which assumed some special importance. The car had been sold to the Iowa Railway Historical Museum in Centerville, Iowa. On Friday, April 6, 1962, Jim and Bob Lewis of the Museum and V. Allan Vaughn of the Iowa Chapter of the NRHS were in Wheaton to prepare 320 for movement to Iowa. That morning was spent oiling journals and motors, removing motor brushes, and boarding up the car for movement. Arrangements had already been made with Walter Schneider, head of the Commercial Metals scrapping operation, for a special movement of this car. At 1:00 P.M. the Commercial Metals EJ&E switcher 212 came up to the car and was coupled up with an adapter coupler. By 1:30, the diesel and car 320 headed down the Aurora branch. By 2:30 P.M. the diesel and car reached the CB&Q interchange at Aurora. After arriving in Aurora, additional work was done on boarding up the windows for the trip west. On Sunday, a CB&Q switcher pulled 320 to the Eola Yard where it was placed on a flat car for shipment to Centerville, Iowa. Only days later the Commercial Metals locomotive would return to Aurora to start ripping up rail. However, 320 arrived safely in Centerville and began museum operations on June 9 and 10, 1962. Consequently, 320 was the last car to operate over CA&E mainline rail. It was also the first museum car to operate after the abandonment of the CA&E. In all, 12 wooden passenger cars, seven steel passenger cars, one line car, and one flat car were saved. As far as is known, all but one car (320) left Wheaton through a temporary interchange track installed by the C&NW in Wheaton. Additional information: Yes, the December 7, 1958 fantrip did take place, and was actually the last passenger train to ever run on the CA&E. Wood cars 319 and 320 were operated that day. We have previously posted a picture taken from that wintry day, and will include it in this post as well. Interestingly, both cars were saved. 319 is at the Illinois Railway Museum, while 320 is in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. 320 had a notable distinction as, I believe, the last car ever to leave the CA&E property in April 1962, just prior to the complete dismantling of the railroad. As Larry Plachno has written: A special note must be made of car 320 which assumed some special importance. CAE Pullman
Title:  CAE Pullman
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad Pullman built (number unknown) at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown date, photo by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. The date is a best guess, based on the automobiles in the background. The car is from the 400-419 number series, built by Pullman in 1923. When the CA&E arrived in Aurora in 1902, they terminated in the streets on tracks shared with the Aurora city lines. By 1927, plans were developed for a four track terminal with interlocking at roughly this location, but later revised to a single track on land fill along the Fox River, finally built in 1939. The passageway at the right side of the frame led to the New York Avenue bridge and the ticket office located in a store facing Broadway Street.

CAE 433
Title:  CAE 433
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad 433 at Wheaton Illinois on an unknown date, photo by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date is unknown, it is sometime after the July 3, 1957 suspension of passenger operations, and probably some time later still, judging by the pole reaching for the wire that isn't there. Number 433 was one of 15 cars built for the CA&E in 1927 by the Cincinnati Car Company, equipped with Baldwin trucks, four GE254 traction motors, and weighing 111,100 pounds, the heaviest cars on the CA&E.

CA&E 436
Title:  CA&E 436
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad 436 at Wheaton, Illinois, date and photographer unknown, my best guess is sometime after the 1940 reconditioning, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 436 was built by Niles Car and Manufacturing Company 1906 as CA&E 305, a 52 seat coach. When the steel Pullmans arrived in 1923, it became necessary to upgrade parlor cars as the old wood equipment would not train with the new steel cars. Number 305 was retired in 1923 and rebuilt in the CA&E Shops into buffet-parlor car number 600. At that time the couplers were changed and steel plate was added to the sides, covering the original wood sheathing. At one time it had taken four buffet employees and a parlor car conductor to man the diners, but that was reduced over time. By 1929, buffet-parlor service was discontinued and the 600 and "Florence" (the other parlor-buffet car) were returned to the shops and converted to 53 seat coaches, renumbered 436 and 435 respectively, retaining (for a while) two of the original four GE66B traction motors. During 1951 those two traction motors were removed and the two former parlor cars operated as control trailers until retired in 1954.

CA&E 600
Title:  CA&E 600
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad 600 approaching Spring Road in Elmhurst, Illinois on an unknown date (best guess, 1924-25) and photographer, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 600 was built by the Niles Car and Manufacturing Company in 1906 as a 52 seat wood-bodied coach number 305. During 1923 the all-steel Pullman coaches were delivered and the CA&E needed a steel (looking) parlor car that would train with the new steel cars. Niles coach 305 and one of the original wood parlor cars named "Florence" were sent through the Wheaton Shops and converted to "steel" parlor buffet cars by attaching steel plate to the wood bodies. The couplers were changed and the 305 emerged as 600 and "Florence" became 601, with 601 retaining its original two traction motors and 600 losing two of its original four. The two new parlor cars operated in this capacity until 1929, when the service was discontinued. Both cars returned to the Shops where they were converted to 53 seat coaches, 600 became 436 and 601 became 435. During 1951 both cars had the remaining traction motors removed and operated until their 1954 retirement as control trailers.

CA&E 604
Title:  CA&E 604
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad 604 at Wheaton, Illinois on April 5, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Number 604 was built by the Cincinnati Car Company in 1913 for the Washington Baltimore & Anapolis Electric Railway as number 39. The CA&E ran short of equipment in the mid-1930's and sought additional rolling stock on the used market. Among those considered were cars from the Indiana Railroad (too rusted) and the Lake Shore Electric (too long for the rapid transit curves). Five powered cars were acquired from the WB&A and were quickly shopped at Wheaton, becoming control trailers 600-604. Then in 1938, the CA&E acquired three powered combination cars from the WB&A, again shopped and converted to control trailers, with bench seats installed in the baggage section.

CA&E Class B 3003
Title:  CA&E Class B 3003
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad Class B 3003 at the Milwaukee Road interchange near Elgin, Illinois, date and photographer unknown, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 3003 was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse for stock (c/n 57070), completed September 21, 1923. It was purchased by the CA&E (as #3001, delivered as #3003) in 1926 and was rated at 400 horsepower with four 562D5 Westinghouse traction motors. The undulating profile and light construction of the CA&E right of way stressed the frame and the truss rods were added after delivery. It was scrapped in August 1963. Number 3004 is also pictured. It was also built for stock, completed April 8, 1924 (c/n 57717), ordered May 10, 1926 by the CA&E as #3002 but delivered as #3004, also scrapped in August 1963. The following is excerpted from the book, Interurban Electric Locomotives From Baldwin-Westinghouse, by Joseph A. Strapac.

In order to sell to customers whose requirements (and electrical and track structure capacity) would not support a Class D, Baldwin-Westinghouse downwardly engineered this design in order to replace the Class A in its catalog. The better built steam road subsidiaries and those lines that delivered considerable tonnage per train could order larger Class D motors (and even operate them in multiple), while B-W could offer a smaller unit to potential customers with less demanding requirements. The Class B locomotives were better suited than the D's for use on lightly built interurban lines, due to their reduced weight and power draw.

One of the reasons there was a Baldwin-Westinghouse at all was because Baldwin Locomotive Works was so successful as an integrated manufacturer. Baldwin had sufficient capacity in its tender shop in downtown Philadelphia that it could easily underbid any proposed assembly by Westinghouse's own forces out in East Pittsburgh. Baldwin built the structure of each locomotive, riveting together an empty box with trucks and couplers (and at least rudimentary train air brakes), based on the familiar technology of locomotive tenders. The frame itself was assembled from standard steel shapes, with heavy Baldwin castings at each end to tie everything together. Even the trucks themselves were adapted from tender trucks used beneath thousands of Baldwin-built steam locomotive tenders. Windows and a host of additional appurtenances would be installed, then the locomotive-to-be would be shunted out to the interchange track. It would be handed off to a line-haul railroad and waybilled (as if it were a freight car) across Pennsylvania to the East Pittsburgh Works of Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing. Westinghouse installed and tested electrical gear at East Pittsburgh. The locomotive would be finish painted, tested and otherwise prepared for delivery. A short stretch of adjustable-voltage overhead behind the Works allowed road testing (and publicity photographs) when the locomotive was complete. The track was historically 'pantograph country' so locomotives destined for customers who used only trolley poles or third rail were often pictured at this site fitted with pantographs, which would be removed prior to shipment. In the early years the consortium delivered interurban freight locomotives to specific order, rather than producing them on speculation for stock. However, Westinghouse occasionally ordered freight locomotives from Baldwin for stock, or in anticipation of orders not yet in hand. This practice tied up capital, but as the market for new locomotives dwindled (and credit grew tighter) during the late 1920's, Westinghouse decided to keep at least one or two new locomotives (with generic equipment) on the back lot in East Pittsburgh.

This appears to be a location to change over from 3rd rail to trolley wire.

CA&E 4006
Title:  CA&E 4006
Description:  Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad 4006 at the IHB interchange in Bellwood, Illinois, date and photographer unknown, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4006 (and 4005, trailing) was built in 1929 in the shops of the Oklahoma Railway as Number 604 (CA&E 4005 was built as Number 603). The pair later served in Coffeyville, Kansas on the Union Electric Railway (#604), then the Cedar Rapids & Iowa City Railway (as #73). The pair was acquired by the CA&E in 1955 and lasted until 1962 when they were scrapped at Wheaton. They weighed 72 tons each.
