Description:  The CP Tec Train, a track geomety inspection train makes its way toward BD after inspecting the line from Mohawk Yard. While the train provides valuable information about track conditions, the operating crews are not always happy to see it, as there are inevitably a raft of slow orders in its wake.

Description:  D 22 rolls 19 cars north behind an SD40/GP 9 combination. Usually the consist was GP 9s or 38s. The other GP 9 must have had a problem, since the SDs were rare on this job. Its late March, but theres still snow on the ground here. Theres a lot more at the top of Belden Hill, even as spring grudginly takes hold of upstate.

Description:  A four unit set of power leads train 165 with its 51 stack platforms and 34 freight across the Harpursville bridge. The odd duck in this flock is the third unit, one of the GP 9us that generally sees only yard service. Description:  Maersk Lines, the steamship company, had NS and Santa Fe paint a couple of diesels for an ad campaign. The BNSF unit was GP 60 146. Here we see the NS unit, 3329, rolling north on CP train 931-NS 31T-at Bevier St in Binghamton. It was the trailing unit of six on that train. Figures-the sun was out!!

Description:  Train 413 is rolling past the parking lot for a restaurant in Afton. If the train got out early enough, especially in the short days of winter, getting a good side angle with some train in it could be a challenge. The feature here, though, is the leader, an ex SOO non dynamic brake SD 40. Bet the engineer was real happy with it coming off Belden and Richmondville.

Description:  Old power was not a big deal on CP. They had lots of it, and ran it til it dropped. The lead unit on this train is unusual in that it was originally one of SOOs non dynamic brake SD40s, a diesel that was becoming rare by this time.

Title:  NS shows
Description:  NS ran two merchandise trains to CN at Montreal, 31T north and 30T south. This is 30T rolling through BX on its way to East Binghamton, where it will get a new crew to take it on to Enola. It could show any time, though afternoons were common. Sometimes if NS didnt have a rested crew, it would get stowed on track 4 at Binghamton til one was ready. Today's power is notable in that the leader is an ex CR SD 70 that was slated to go to NS when it was purchased. The second unit is one of the NW low nose SD40-2's acquired in the late 70's, and anomaly for NW, which had always specified high short hoods and long hood forward operation.

Description:  CP 930 was also NS 30T, which runs from CP-St Luc in Montreal to Enola, with run through NS power. Here we see it southbound passing the old Binghamton Agway as it approaches the diamond at BD and Conklin yard. It will change crews here and continue south via Scranton and Sunbury.
