For a while, coal trains to New England got run through P&LE power. As was common, it would not always stay on the coal trains once it got to its destination. Such is the case here as a trio of U28s roll south with a merchandise train. |

The Tier was known for its many Erie RR era semaphores. There were at least two pairs, one at Arkport, about five miles west of Hornell, rarely seen due to the walk in nature of their location; and this pair at Tioga Center, which were adjacent to NY 17C, and easy to photograph. ABBU, running wrong main, passes between them on its way west. |

ABBU at E Glass |
Description: |
This photo shows the area on the east side of Corning that was CP E Glass for much of Conrails existence. The relay case can be seen to the left of track 1 at the crossovers. The lead to the Corning Secondary is the track going off to the left at the lower left corner of the frame. The E Glass/N Glass/W Glass complex formed a wye that connected the Corning Secondary and the Southern Tier Line. The Corning Secondary had been the NYC line along Seneca Lake to Geneva and a connection with the Water Level Route, now Conrails Chicago Line. Trains such as SYEN would come down this line, taking the W Glass leg of the wye and roll through Gang Mills Yard, where there was a connection back to the old alignment on the east side of the Tioga River. That line went down the Grand Canyon of PA to a connection with the Pennsy at Jersey Shore PA on the Buffalo Line. This was part of the 1951 realignment that took both the Central and the Erie out of the street in downtown Corning, a route now followed by NY 352, locally Dennison Pkwy. To the left of the existing track is an empty right of way. This was the DLW, which parallelled the Erie here, having returned to its own line just east of here after the 1959 facilities coordination, whereby the DLW abandoned its main as a through route from the west side of Binghamton. Here at Gibson it returned to its own line to reach Bath, Cohocton, and Groveland on its way to Buffalo. That line would be downgraded, and mostly abandoned after the 1960 EL merger. Prior to 1959, the DLW ran next to the Erie from here to Horseheads, where the lines separated to enter Elmira. |

Through the snow |
Description: |
BUEB rolls 78 cars east toward Binghamton in the snowy fields of western NY, seen from a local road bridge near Dalton. The power was common in those days. The SD26 is a recent acquisiton of Guilford, and will ultimately be painted Springfield Terminal. As if that wasn't enough heritage, the third unit is an ex Rock Island U25B. |

Not exactly dashing through the snow |
Description: |
But making decent enough time. A telephoto view of BUEB rolling east at Dalton behind the kind of power mix only Guilford could concoct. At least the B&M unit is leading. |

Guilford trio |
Description: |
BUME behind three Guilford painted units rolls along the rock wall next to NY 17 just east of Corning with 48 cars. This was a challenging shot for an eastbound, as you had to stand on the shoulder of westbound NY 17, an expressway. Timing had to be good, as you could not stop here long. I got it right this sunny morning, catching three Guilford units, one each for the component roads, though the leader and trailing units had been "transferred" away from the D&H. |

BUME with Guilford power |
Description: |
This view of BUME behind a solid set of Guilford power is notable for two reasons. First, a solid set of power on the D&H was notable any time it happened, though Guilford still managed to mix up the power, with one unit from each of their roads. Interestingly, the first and last units started out on the D&H, despite now being lettered for MEC and B&M. The other reason is that this shot gives an overview of the rail remnants of Corning as they appeared in the late 1980s. This is taken from the NY 414 overpass, looking west. The train is on the former Erie main, which is a relocation of the original main which ran down what is now NY 352 through downtown Corning. The "new" 1951 Erie station was just to the left of the train where it curves out of the photo. The empty right of way to the right of the train was the DLW, which was abandoned in stages between here and Buffalo following the EL merger in 1960; as it was, the line had only a year left as a through route after the consolidation of facilities in 1959, where the DLW abandoned much of its line from here to Binghamton in favor of running on the Erie. The connection was just east of the overpass Im standing on. The line in the distance is the connection from Conrails Corning Secondary, once the NYC line to Jersey Shore PA, itself relocated out of the street as part of the Erie relocation project in 1951-the lines had joined just east of downtown. It will join the Southern Tier at CP W Glass about 1/2 mile to the west, approximately where the Erie station stood. |

Late afternoon at BD |
Description: |
MEBU with a mix of power only found on the D&H rolls 109 cars past BD as it makes its way into East Binghamton. The last two units, a pair of D&H GP39s, are the power for SU 2, which MEBU picked up at Afton. |
