Southern Pacific #1423
Title:  Southern Pacific #1423
Description:  Niles Canyon Railroad Museum - This Locomotive was part of a second batch of 40 NW2's delivered in 1949, with 23 going to the Pacific Lines (#1403-1425) and 17 going to the Texas & New Orleans (#72-88). In 1965 the locomotive was renumbered to #1951 and painted in the SP gray and scarlet. In 1972, SP decided to add postwar NW2's to their rebuild program and the #423 was rebuilt at the Houston Shops. In September 1972, the locomotive was upgraded to an NW2-E and renumbered to #1335. The locomotive was retired from the Southern Pacific in 1986, and eventually ended up at the Parr Terminal Railroad of Richmond, California. Parr Terminal operated the locomotive until 1998 and then donated it to the Pacific Locomotive Association in 2000. The locomotive arrived at the Niles Canyon Railway during December of 2000 and a seven month rebuild was begun. Association Volunteer Ken Asmus led the work, some of which included: removing and having the blowers rebuilt, top end work on the engine, a complete air brake system rebuild, new traction motor cabling installed, and other electrical work. As part of the restoration, the locomotive was backdated to its original appearance by replacing the sealed beam headlights, installing a single chime air horn and a new bell. The final touch was painting the locomotive in the black and orange Southern Pacific "Tiger Stripe" paint scheme as it was delivered from EMD.

Southern Pacific #2472 under a tarp
Title:  Southern Pacific #2472 under a tarp
Description:  Niles Canyon Railroad Museum - #2472 was built in 1921. SP classed the 2472 as a P-8, along with 14 sister engines built from the same order. The 2472's first assignments were passenger trains on the Overland Route between Ogden, Utah and Oakland, California. Crews appreciated the smooth ride afforded by the engines of its class. Overland Route runs used the same engine without change for 500 miles. When larger and more powerful locomotives replaced Pacific’s on long runs, the Pacific’s were relegated to locals and commute service, particularly the San Francisco - San Jose run. This is where many remember seeing the #2472 performing its daily chores. The #2472 served for almost 36 years on the Southern Pacific. The end came in 1957 when diesels had replaced almost all steam engines on the SP. Fortunately, the #2472 was saved from the scrapper's torch and was put on display in San Mateo's County Fairgrounds. It sat there until 1976 when a group of determined volunteers decided to restore it.

Former Southern Pacific #6378, L&NW #46
Title:  Former Southern Pacific #6378, L&NW #46
Description:  The Niles Canyon Railroad Museum collection has this locomotive as well as the former Southern Pacific F7A #6380, coupled to the rear of the unit shown. The 6378 and 6380 were part of a group traded to General Electric for new units in the late 1960's. Luckily GE did not scrap these units as was the fate of 1000's of others. GE resold a group of these units, including the 6478 and 6480, to the Salzberg Family who owned a number or shortline railroads. The units were originally sent to the Wellsville, Addison and Galeton Railroad (WAG) in Upstate New York where they became WAG 2100 and WAG 2000, respectively. In August 1969, the units were transferred to the Louisiana and North West Railroad (L&NW) and were renumbered 46 and 45, respectively.
