Description:  CN 2102 leads this westbound through the station at Dorval. The trailing unit is also notable: 2317. Who would have thought you could see engine numbers of two prominent steam excursion engines on diesels on the same train. Go figure. This group of steamer wannabe's has 107 cars behind them.

Modern Alco
Title:  Modern Alco
Description:  This HR 616 leads 102 cars west through Dorval in the company of a couple of GP40-2LWs. The HR 616 was a Bombardier engine produced at the same time as the M420s, and was intended to revive the Alco design in the railroad industry. It didnt work out so well, and only a few were built, all for CN.

Into the sun
Title:  Into the sun
Description:  Seems like the trains are always going the wrong way. I went to Montreal with a couple of friends to ride the Atlantic before it came off, and spent the day out at Ile Perot and Dorion shooting trains. We got there around 0730, so of course the first couple of trains were westbound, such as this one behind a pair of wide cab GP 40s, making me shoot right into the sun. The day would get better, though, and we saw and shot lots of trains that day.

Description:  An older Alco is the second unit on this eastbound. CN had some RS 18s that were retrucked with A1A trucks to spread the weight on some of their lighter rail branches, and redesignated RSC 13. This one was on a road train passing the station at Moncton.

Description:  This time its a westbound, led by another HR 616. These units seemed to be all over eastern Canada. We had seen several in the Montreal area as well. This train is like a survey of MLW power, with six of seven units of MLW heritage, dating back to the 50's.

Description:  We found ourselves on a city tour of Halifax as part of the cruise we were taking to the Maritimes. Part of the route was down near the CN yard there. I was able to grab a shot of the engine facility as we turned a corner, getting some sleeping power waiting for its next trip west.

Marine division
Title:  Marine division
Description:  Among the roads CN has absorbed over the years is the Algoma Central, which runs toward the interior of Ontario from Sault Ste Marie. I was not aware they had a shipping line as well. As our cruise docked in Quebec City, I was surprised to see this ship in the harbor; looks like its unloading coal. In years past, railroads had sometimes extensive marine operations, mostly tugs and barges, but also larger vessels, includiing ocean going ships.
