Crossing the swollen river
Title:  Crossing the swollen river
Description:  The NYSW ran trains for the Marathon Maple Festival for a number of years in the 80s and 90s, using whatever power was available and clean, usually Alcos, though in later years it was the 142 and a variety of SD 45s. This train had Alcos fore and aft, and we see D&H 5023, the one with the best paint, cleaned up and leading the first train for the 1989 weekend across the Chenango River, close to overflowing its banks due to spring runoff.

Big crowd
Title:  Big crowd
Description:  The Maple Festival always drew a big crowd, many more people that the small town was normally able to accommodate. The train was a good way for people to come down from Cortland, as parking was at a premium. The Cortland County Sheriff even had deputies out to direct traffic, as we see here by the station. Note the heavy coats. The temperature was only in the 30's, not uncommon for that time of year. At least the sun was out. Some years it snowed.

Crowd at the station
Title:  Crowd at the station
Description:  The Marathon Maple Festival is on, and as usual the weather is crappy-cloudy and cold. Theres still a good crowd for the train to Cortland, being overseen by a couple of Cortland County deputies. NYSW usually sent classic power for this event-Alcos or a very clean SD 45. Everything must have been running freight, since this looks like a run of the mill GP 39 that was assigned because it was available.

Title:  Heading to the train

NYSW has their office car on display, which they usually did at the festival.

This is the north end of the Maple Festival train at Marathon, waiting to head back to Cortland with another load of well fed festival goers. NYSW 509, the "Popemobile," is on the north end of the train, though looks like the Pope is getting a really good look at the end of a C 430 on this trip.
