Engine change at South Amboy, NJ.
Title:  Engine change at South Amboy, NJ.
Description:  This train is headed for Bay Head, NJ. on the NY & LB. The GG-1 that delivered the train fron Penn Station has cut off and is returning to the So. Amboy Engine Terminal. Two E-8's will take the train through non electrified territory and return north later. Note the Conductor and Engineer on the left conferring about the trip they are going to take down the Jersey Shore (today it's called a job briefing). A ride on the old NY & LB was truly a throwback to yesterday. Date of this photo is approximate but it is definetly pre Conrail.

RDC Commuter Train.
Title:  RDC Commuter Train.
Description:  Two Budd Cars make an "f" stop at Crugers, NY. Note that the lead RDC is an RDC 3. It is an ex NYC unit. I like this picture because first, it looks like it could be 1965 or 1955 and second because of the unusualness of seeing an RDC-3 at this time on a commuter run and third this photo clearly shows the train crew communicating with hand signals. Train is a mid-day local out of Harmon for Poughkeepsie. I do not remember the train number. Date is an approximation. I do know that this photo was taken late in the Penn Central era.

Amtrak Train Number 73.
Title:  Amtrak Train Number 73.
Description:  Amtrak #73 makes an "s" stop at Poughkeepsie. This version of Amtrak's paint scheme was, in my opinion, among one of its finest (Blue and Silver Mist and pointless arrow). Date is approximate.

CCH 1210 and 1201
Title:  CCH 1210 and 1201
Description:  Former New Haven locomotives (NH 1210 and 1201) work a passenger train just south of "CP Middleboro" on Conrail's Middleboro Branch in 1984. The yard track looks rough but the Main Line was in pretty good shape. It had some welded rail and the old NH CTC signaling system was still in place. In about two miles the train will enter state - owned track operated by Bay Colony Railroad. The state spent ALOT of $ to rebuild this line from MP 1.5 (end of CR property, these 1.5 miles were retained by CR to access Ocean Spray) to Hyannis. When the work was done the track was beautiful and good for 50MPH (probably more than that) for passnger trains. Unfortuneately PC removed the CTC on this portion of the Middleboro Branch several years prior to this photo. CCH was an excellent place to learn the finer points of train handling since many experienced NH Old Colony Division employees worked with the younger guys to make CCH work. These guys knew this territory like the backs of their hands. Throw in a couple of old New York Central guys and a couple of furloughed CR guys and you had the making of a good "Railroad College". There were several CR New England Division hourly and supervisory employees who put alot of effort in to moving these passenger trains. It was a shame but the Bay Colony seemed to have not liked the CCH very much. Many former CCH employees went on to work for Conrail, Amtrak and MBTA in operating and supervisory positions. Exact date of photo is unknown. I wonder where these fine locomotives ended up? Exact date of picture is not known.

Kansas City vs. Buffalo.
Title:  Kansas City vs. Buffalo.
Description:  After the Conrail split, lots of strange things started happening in Buffalo, NY. KCS and NS power started to show up at the South Buffalo Railway. For a while the SB was classifying trains for the NS coming up the Old Conrail Buffalo Line beacuse the NS did not have enough room to classify their own trains. This really was a nightmare! View is from Station D Tower. Still, I was always amazed of how busy and how many cars a small railroad like the SB handled. Not sure of the date but compared to things now, I'm sure it was the "good old days"..

LMIC 36
Title:  LMIC 36
Description:  LMIC 36 dragging 60 cars of hot bands to the NS interchange at Burns Harbor. This locomotive came here from the South Buffalo Railway when the LMIC started in September of 1999. Originally this was Cambria and Indiana number 36 (not sure about that though). It had flexicoil trucks which were replaced before it left Buffalo and the old drum type control stand. It was old but it had balls. It was sent back to the SB a couple of years later minus a lot of parts. It don't know where it went after that. It may appear to you that this train is being operated with an RCL. It is not as there are no LMIC locos equipped to operate in that mode. You can see the conductor on the platform in his rain gear. The King of all Mutants is in the cab.

Title:  CKIN Kankakee River Bridge
Description:  First bridge is ex C&O ML Cincinnati to Chicago bridge. Just behind it is the former PRR (CR) ML Columbus to Chicago bridge. CKIN and HVRM still run trains on the C&O bridge but the CR bridge has been out of service with rails removed since the early 1980's.
